I am replacing the 3 fuel lines (pipes) that run from the engine bay to the gas tank. I have the gas tank off because I am replacing it as well and have removed all the clips and brackets holding the lines in place but because of the shapes of these lines and all the twists and turns they take and them being rigid I cannot remove them since they pass underneath the rear differential and suspension and stuff. I wanted to do this job myself but am thinking about calling a tow to haul it to the dealer to do.

 

Get a good pair of Cutters and cut as much as you can.
Disconnect the Lines at the gas tank and then you can shove them down towards the ground.
I replaced a fuel hardline with the car on stands and the line was 16 feet long,so It was quite the thing,seeing a 50 year old grunting with a big steel snake in his hands!

 

OK...cutting the old lines to get them out shouldn't be much of a problem...I am sure I can do that! I was trying to pull them out in one piece. The 3 new hard lines are all pre-bent and they are long as hell so I will have to get them in there somehow without bending the crap out of them. My car is on ramps so there isn't a whole lot of room to move either!

Well I cut and yanked all the lines out of there...what a messy job! I don't think I will be able to get the new ones in there without bending and I do not have the skill to drop the subframe to sneak the lines in there so I guess I will have to get it towed to the dealer....

 

You can most likely get the line in from the back of the car to the tank,but I tell ya it will be a little tight.
I went ahead and had to snake the steel line up and sideways and every which way..in order to get it up the the fuel tank..but I got it!..
your preformed lines should make it easier,,I had 16 feet of un-coiled from a Roll straightened out steel line..haha!

 

Yikes!!! I"ll give it a try before giving up and resigning it to the stealer!

 

you need to drop the fuel tank. one of those hard lines goes to an evap valve that is on top of the tank and dropping the tank is easiest way to get to it.

 

Why not just drop the subframe and diff? Besides needing two jacks, it's not an unreasonable job and should be doable in a day.

 

The tank is already out because I am replacing it...it is too rusty inside!

 

I don't know if I would be able to swing that big a job myself. The rear wheels are on ramps already so obviously I would need to put it on stands...but I am not crazy about working underneath a car only on jackstands.

 

Um, you need to get over that fear of jackstands dude. Jackstands are safe, especially on an ultralight 3000lb car.

 

Alright, 9 months later I decide to tackle the job. I looked at it and thought I would be able to just snake the lines in without dropping the subframe and diff. I ran the smaller evap line not too bad. I then tried the larger fuel return (?) line. Well, I bent the **** out of it unfortunately but it is somewhat in there...all bent out of shape...not happy. I decided against trying the same thing with the even larger main fuel line. I'm afraid of bending and twisting it in there and making it weaken or something..I don't know. Kind of discouraged right now...

 

You are having a WUASTFC* moment, belated as may be.

Sometimes the apparently more difficult approach is actually the easier, if not only, path to success.
Wishful thinking and pouting won't get those lines installed, dropping the subframe will.

I know you're right..although it seems like a disproportionately big job now for only one line. I'll give it a go tomorrow!

 

HOLY COW!..
I just did ANOTHER gas line repair..(different car)..and Ya,I dropped the subframe thinking I could form nice lines and put them where the old ones would be,..NOPE!
The damn tube bender was a POS,and I kinked the lines.. finally,I got an idea,: Rubber HI pressure line and Steel clamps with rubber sleeve to protect the hose..Worked out Nicely.
Now the Out and Return are NEW,the Underbody has new steel lines,and the Pump and filter have new connections too..Oh,and all new Fuel injection clamps..
I feel safe now.

 

Was dropping the subframe a big job? How long did it take? I have the Haynes manual and the shop manual but I don't feel confident doing it, otherwise I would have done it a LONG time ago! lol!

 

It took me 2 hours,alone..just casually undoing nuts,and getting the jack in place,etc.
If you want.Send me your Email,and I can take a pic and show you what I did to put the lines on.I gotta do some tinkering on the car tomorrow..again..heh!
The Rear subframe is still out and the Line routing is visible.The lines are Still mounted in the same bolt holes as before.Basically the same routing and the same Size overall,
I originally was going to just use the "cages" of the Line holders and run the Rubber lines through them,but they looked like ****,so I found these Clamps at a BENSON Auto parts store and used them,they are perfect for the lines and also you can use then to run harness wires too!
The idea I had to use the same clamps:..Punch the rubber out and put the new rubber lines through the Clamps.The lines will follow the old routing..No dropping of the Diff.

 

I would love to see some pics. Since it's been 9 months that I ripped the old lines out I am trying to remember what goes where. I'll PM you my email!

Well,I've sort of dropped a couple of them before..heh!..and around here you fend for yourself making due with what ya got!
I had a 20 piece socket set when I got my first car..now I have a 8x8 shed FULL of tools,parts, bits and pieces..and I need a BIGGER garage!( which I just got today!..Yay!)
