After my trip up to Albuquerque for the RotaryRx BBQ I am recommending defection, from I-10 that is, for those East of NM.
It appears that there may be a reasonable # of 7s leaving form RotaryRx.com traveling along I-40. From what I gathered their plan is to run straight though to Irvine.
The downside is I-10ers would need to make a 3hr detour N on I-25 at Las Cruces or take 285 from Fort Stockton, TX to 380 at Roswell, NM to I-25.
There a number of +s though:
1st- If you are from northern TX it is the shortest route (I-40 straight through).
2nd-The 1st meeting point would be rotary garage and thereafter would be traveling with rotary mechanics, which could be useful (as many of those who have done it before know).
3rd-I know many from TX are more limited by time vs. mileage, if they run straight through from Abq that would cut a day off the trip (The normal I-10 theory is TX to Las Cruces NM first day, Phoenix second day, Irvine third).
4th-It would be more time driving with more 7s (which is the whole point), vs. just the I-10 guys from LC to Phoenix.
5th-I haven't taken that route for a long time, but I believe the drive should be a bit more interesting vs. I-10.
6th- As far as I know all the cars that have come through Las Cruces on I-10 in the past have been 1st or 2nd gens (not including the 1 trailered 3rd gen). The Albuquerque contingent seems to be 1 & 2nd gen oriented with a number of interesting project cars for both gens, so you get to see cool stuff sooner.
What do you think?

I'm down, I've driven I-10 so many times it's stupid. A change of scenery would be welcome....definately have to stop in Roswell and geek out! Are we still going to get to meet up with the AZ guys? Those guys were awesome last year. But now the most important question......do I bring the FC, or the FD? ;-)
-John
Edit: Figured out Mapquest.com and I guess we wouldn't be meeting up with the AZ guys.

If you want to geek out the museum at Roswell is the place. Don't forget about Carlsbad caverns and Lincoln, NM (the sight of the Lincoln County War that made Billy the Kid famous, a very well preserved state park). Of course to actually see any of it you would have to stay the night somewhere over there.
As far a joining up with the Phoenix group, I think it may be a possibility, if the AZ guys were to put a bit of pressure on the Alb guys. I don't think there are any firm plans in place. The only real problem is that the Alb guys would have to stay the night in Phoenix (with the hotel cost and an extra day off), instead of running straight through. It would be pretty cool though if we had a good turnout from both states cruising together.
At the moment I just want to get the idea of the I-10 to I-40 detour, and possibly the I-40 back to I-10 at Phoenix detour out there before plans are firmed up around Sept.
As far as what car you should take, I know you know my opinion.

Everything sounds good, I'll run it past the other possibles tonight. I hope the Alb guys have as good of a turnout as the AZ guys. Either way, I am tired of I-10 and would like to see some new scenery so a detour will be planned for.
And for which car to take....well the FC has been to two SS's and the FD may even be more reliable by that time. ;-) I guess we'll just have to see when Oct. comes around.

In classic 7stock caravan fashion, I'm dropping out. My gf's vacation ends on the Mon. after 7stock (year round teacher) so we're leaving early to hit the grand canyon/Vegas prior to heading to Irvine. I've also been informed I'm going to Disney land on Friday so I'll miss the I-15 caravan as well. I will be up for an I-10 return caravan on Sunday though.
I talked to a few people about staying at my place in NM, since that won't be possible, I'll be happy to take care of your hotel stay in NM.

So, who is still in for the I-10 caravan? Are we Corpus guys still the farthest SE group? Any MS or LA people not flying? FL? I'm planning on 3 cars from Corpus, but I'm the only one set in stone driving.....I sure don't want to be alone all the way to AZ!! Let's keep this alive!

Once again, members of RCCAZ will be leading a caravan from Phoenix into
Irvine, California, with our planned departure set for Friday morning, October 7th (see tentative schedule listed below). Participants can still make hotel reservations at our traditional Sevenstock venue the DoubleTree Hotel Santa Ana, 201 E. MacArthur Blvd. Santa Ana, CA 92707.
Rates for the DoubleTree are as follows:
DoubleTree = $86 per night with parking included
The DoubleTree is preferred by several RCCAZ members due to the covered and secure parking structure. Reservations at the DoubleTree can be made by calling 714-825-3333 and telling them that you're with the RCCAZ group by Friday, September 23rd! You should get the $86 rate (parking inclusive) from Friday through Sunday evening.
Also, don't miss out on the Sevenstock Banquet set for Saturday evening. Reservations are filling up quickly and tickets will NOT be sold at the event. Cost for the dinner is $39.99 per person. Mazda always puts together a great dinner program and usually unveils a few rotary news first announcements at the event. Reservations can be made online by using the following link:

Caravan From The East
Man, you call that a caravan? I'm looking to drive out from Pittsburgh, PA and would like to find a passenger/co-driver. I know this is last minute, but my wife won't go (she hates to sit in the car for long periods... needless to say, she is NOT an enthusiast). I haven't cancelled my hotel room just yet, in the hopes I will find somebody. I only require that the person be a non-smoker, be able to drive a manual, and be a good navigator. I do not discriminate on age, race, religion, gender, etc, however the lighter (weight-wise), the better. This is because, as you know, space is limited in an FD RX-7, especially with the stock Bose Wave system. Now, if you are interested, and are somewhere within a few hours of Pittsburgh, PA, please contact me at tworx7s@zoominternet.net (I do not check this forum oftern enough, and since time is of the essence...).
Thanks!

I know I already dropped out of the caravan, but due to a lack of time I'm completely dropping out. As far as I know, there is no one east of AZ driving in on I-10 this year.
If you happen to be around Las Cruces, NM and can't make it to SS8 either, come check out the private spaceships and few rocket launches at the X-prize Cup http://www.xpcup.com/index.cfm
