From someone who knows
I've used Mazsport, Maztech, & Pettit in Florida and have had my FD since 1994 although its sort of now 2 FDs since a totalling about 3 years back. Both of the main Tampa area shops have rebuilt my motors and done other work.
Here are my impressions:
Maztech - Jeff is honest, very reasonable priced. He isn't by any means fast but he is competant. My stuff didn't go so well but there was a lot of work thrown at him and he generally sends "performance" stuff to Mazsport owned by Scott an ex-employee.
Mazsport - Avoid like the plague. I used him stupidly for the last few years deceiving myself with his smooth talk after taking it in the rear from his failed work repeatedly. Expensive, slow (he had my car almost 9 months and I had to get a court order to get it back). He probably is competant but who cares when he takes you to the cleaners and is completley unrealistic about completion times and writtien estimates. Several I know have had serious problems and some local guy sued him as well a few months ago. This shop is trouble and I ran into an ex-mechanic there (unforrtunaley now waitering) who spoke of their unethical behaviour and frequent customer complaints. I could go on but I'll stop.
Pettit - Go here. Im 4 hours away and its worth it. Fast, Competant, honest.
Not cheap, didn't seem expensive either.
