Rotaries at the NC Zoo!

Anyone interested in having a rotary day at the NC Zoological Park in Asheboro? It is a pretty good location for day trip to the Zoo from most areas of North Carolina and the challenge would be to find the most interesting route to drive to get there. It would be a good outing to shake all the cobwebs and rust off the 7s and enjoy a great drive. The Zoo is a great place to spend a day in the fall.

Let me know what you think.

Well I don't know Bert.... All those rotary exhaust fumes probably aren't good for the animals.

But, then again, I'm not a tree-hugging hippy so let's do it.

All right Jason, we'll just introduce another evolutionary challenge and see which animals can adapt to a higher than normal CO level. We have adapted and are doing alright, well relatively speaking, we're doing OK. What was the motto of the recon marines in Heart Break Ridge? "Improvise, Adapt, Overcome"

They'll just have to adapt and overcome!

The idea was to have something that was close to alot of rotary owners. It seems to me that we have rotary congregations in Charlotte, the Triad area, RTP, the military bases in eastern NC, and possibly might drwa some interest from western NC, at least the hickory area. The VIR 400 is set for the third weekend of October. We could plan this for October 1st or 2nd and see how many rotaries we can pull together from all over NC, Virginy, and SC if the need for speed hits anyone in the Palmetto state. Here is a link to their website: http://www.nczoo.org/

Time would be from whenever your group arrives until the Zoo closes. If there is a good BBQ restaurant in Asheboro, we could all try to meet for an early lunch before driving on out to the Zoo. I haven't been to Asheboro in a while so someone more familiar with the area will have to make that call.

Any other ideas are welcome. We'll have a bigger turnout on Sunday for the RRDI guys since several have to work on Saturdays. Post up what works best for you and we can make further plans based on the input. This would be a fun drive and an opportunity to get a lot of rotorheads together.

If we are planning for October, I am voting for the first weekend of the month. The second weekend, the 8th, won't work for me b/c I will be in Ireland.

The Rotaries at the Zoo event is on for Sunday, October 2. The Zoo closes at 5:00 pm so we'll plan on starting to arrive between 10:00 and 11:00. We can eat early in Asheboro or do lunch on your own after getting to the Zoo. More details later but just wanted everyone to know that there will be Rotaries at the NC Zoon on Sunday October 2nd.

Sad!! Can we move it to Sept. 24th?? Or the weekend of the 8th? I've been dying to take David to the NC Zoo... but he's going to be underway the weekend of the 2nd.

...Please?

I'm gonna go either way, but I'd really REALLY like him to make it to more Rotary events, too. Plus, that way people wouldn't have to ask off from work two weekends in a row... since the weekends before and after the 2nd are Drive In weekends.

Sorry but the second weekend is the Grand Am Race on Saturday the 8th of October and 9/24 seems too early for everyone to make plans, beside the date has already been announced and people have started making plans. I have learned that once you set a date for something like this it is better to stick with it so as not to discourage people and appear disorganized. We'll go on Sunday the 2nd and has David not heard of AWOL? A cruise or a rotary event, which has priority. OK, so a little brig time might be awaiting him when he gets back to Norfolk, look at it as time to catch up on his reading and quiet contemplation.

The Zoo adventure is still on for Sunday, October 2. We'll have all the details at the up coming drive-in and will make plans to meet up and drive down together.

Keep watching this thread for info and if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for good driving roads to the Asheboro post'em here. We should have groups driving in from Charlotte, the Triad area, maybe Hickory and Asheville if we're lucky, definitely from the RTP area and a few coming up from Jacksonville.

If you got a rotary, its roadworthy, and want to see some real animals it their natural environment (inside a rotary powered marvel) then join us at the NC Zoo, we might also have time to see some other animals in their natural environments but they won't be drivin' anything. Come join the fun.

Go to this site and it will give you directions for driving from Jacksonville to Clinton, then on to Fayetteville, and from Fayetteville taking Hwy 24 West to I-74 and then north to Asheboro. Yahoo says its about 180 miles, 'bout a 2.5 hour drive for you! There are a lot of little towns along the way so you might want to allow an extra hour unless you want to drive up and to Raleigh and leave with us.

Jason, sorry you're gonna miss this trip but definitely understand about having to save gas and money for a trip home. Maybe next time.

Hey, is anyone from the Charlotte area gonna make it over to Asheboro for the Rotary Zoo Day? Lauren said she'd be there and besides the Raleigh guys want to meet some of the big city rotary owners. Also the rotary owners from G'boro, HP, WS, Burlington and the Triad area, looking forward to seeing y'all. come on down to Asheboro. Everyone else join the fun if you can make it on October 2.

Zoo is just one letter short of Zoom.... cheap bump people. We're on for this meet! Oct. 2nd at the NC Zoo in Asheboro, we'll all meet there between 10 - 11 am. Shouldn't be hard, just follow the exhaust fumes to find one another!

I might be able to make it. Trying to get my '78 up and running or I will bring my FD with me.

How much does it cost to get into the Zoo? If it is below $20.00 I can make it if it is above then I cannot.

My '85 is in the Transmission shop so I am saving money to get her out. I upgraded her shift kit to hit harder for when I put a custom made 12A Turbo in her.

Admission Prices

The ticket prices as posted here: http://www.nczoo.org/tickets/
are $10 for adults, $8.00 for students, and $6.00 for children. Go to the above URL for any questions or information you need about the NC Zoo.

I think we ought to call this the "Rotary Rendezvous at the Zoo". The RRDI group will meet at 0730 or 7:30 AM at the Cracker Barrell in Morrisville for breakfast or 8:30 AM at the Caribou Coffee shop in Briars Creek Shopping Center for those that don't want to enjoy a great breakfast the the fellowship of your rotarian brothers and sisters but still want coffee to wake up. Doug said he'd come up with some interesting back roads to drive on the way to Asheboro.

Here are some pictures from the NCZP:

The plan is to meet rotary owners from other parts of the state at this central location; have an early lunch in Asheboro around 11:00 AM; then head out to the Zoological Park. The NCZP closes at 5:00 PM so everyone will have plenty of time to find their way home and do some back road driving afterward.

All are welcome and encouraged to get outta the house that day and get a caravan together from your area and head to Asheboro. Besides the rotaries need the excercise and you might enjoy the Zoo also.
