Need help finding owner of RX7

A Black FD RX7 has been sitting at this body shop across the street from my house for 6 plus years. I went and asked the guy if he would be willing to sell it, he said its not his to sell.

He said he cant get in contact with the owner, and doesnt remember his name. He said I could take the vin and see if I could find him,

How do I find the owner with just the vin number?

Thanks

The guy who owns the body shop doesn't remember who owns it, yet it's sitting at his shop? lol You sure it wasn't used as a getaway car or has drugs hidden in it?

haha. I think its odd too myself. But the car is wrecked in the front, and the body shop itself has closed down. The guy retired and just does work there on the side.

Department of Liscensing should be able to look it up. I believe if you take the VIN number in you should be able to have them attempt to contact the previous owner at last known address, and if there is no response they can issue the title in your name? I'm not 100% sure how that works, but I know people who have done that for issues of buying a car, not transferring the title and losing it at some point.

Go down to or try calling the title office and ask them what the options are. States have different laws regarding abandoned vehicles and it's tough to tell you what could happen in your situation. In some states, only mechanic shops and impound yards can apply for an abandoned title.

Ive tried to do this for 2 cars abandoned in a Kmart parking lot in wilmington NC which were sitting for a year or more with flat tires and I had the cops come over and run the plate on one car and the VIN on the other and they were fine as far as theft and criminal activity. I steady cased these 2 cars for 2 weeks making calls and talking to people. I talked to the owner of the Kmart and he said it was fine to tow them off since he had no idea whose they were and wanted to get them off his lot. When I called the tow company and gave them all the info on where they were at and stuff the owner said they usually have to crush abandoned vehicles since its a hard long process of getting the title b/c the state has to send a letter to the last known address and if they arent there to respond or willing to pay the storage fee the process drags out even longer plus miscellaneous fees and paying the tow company for storage blah blah blah. Anyway, thats what the tow guy said. And wouldnt you know it the day I was going to have them towed they both go missing. So i wouldnt suggest talking to a tow company until the day youre ready to tow b/c thats who I believe took the 93 MR2 and 1985 Corolla SR5 I was watching for so long. So Im still kinda in the dark about the whole process but will be a little smarter next time I try for an abandoned vehicle.
