Last year was my first event and it blew me away. Wouldn't miss it again.
you are right....real reason for DGRR is the cars and they still will be there. count me in!!!!!

I agree that the dragon is overrated anyway. There are plenty of other great drives in the area. If the weather is nice, the dragon ends up packed, with people going 20mph, and cops every 20 feet.

Everyone has opinions and here is mine:

I Disagree with the last post. The Dragon is NOT overrated. Considering that there are 318 curves in that 11 miles stretch of road. There is no other road like that with curve after curve that I have ever driven, not in the Catoctin Mountains, nor Blue Ridge Mountains. The dragon is what I consider the most perfect road for driving curves. I don't think there is a single curve that is off camber, there are challenging decreasing radius turns, and it is just plain fun fun fun. Now if you are just trying to show off your horsepower and not the handling, you may not enjoy it that much. I do need a break at each end after driving through all those curves, but I love it.

Now that said, there are plenty of fun roads around there and even if there is not a chance I get to drive on it this time, I would not miss hanging with all the rotary enthusiast and seeing all the various rotary vehicles. And over the years I have driving plenty of miles just to drive to a single rotary event without half as many rotorheads in one place.

What kills it for me Holly is the traffic and the revenue collectors (but I do recognize it is a public road after all).

I still think that it being closed will not affect the event. There are plenty of available options in the area, and a lot of interesting people and cars.

Good News!! Looks like the Dragon will be open next Wednesday. From www.dealsgap.com:

Friday April 2

Good morning and a happy good friday to everyone. Things contiue to move forward on getting the Dragon reopened by Wen next week. Waiting now for all the paperwork to be signed so the barricade can be moved.

Key things to remember:

1- It will not be one way traffic, you have to turn around and come back to the resort.

2- Two way traffic will mean crossing the double yellow puts you at risk as well as other motorcycle riders. Will resault in serious injury or a fatality.

3- THP will patrol ever day until the slide is gone, this is for our protection NOT I say again NOT to write endless tickets and use it as a revinue builder.

Easy stuff gang, we can have the Dragon for once without semi traffic on it. No word yet when the road will be open for thru traffic that will be up to the rock slide when they bring it down. But just at $2 million for the winning contract I do not see it as taking long or they will be losing money fast.

I agree with Holly! It is not the main reason to go, but a damn fantastic one! For someone living in the low country, The dragon is 318 turns in 11 miles. The low country is like 11 turns in 318 miles!!

As for the traffic, it should be minimal, due to the no thru way. and most people do pull over. Those that dont will have to hear about it when they get to end with no where to go LMAO!

Plus, one of the largest gatherings of rotorheads, fine representation of all forms of rotary powered vehicles, with almost endless mod combinations, it is something to behold and give you ideas of what you may like in the future.

Not to mention the late night shenanigans that go on

I'm going regardless. See ya there!

I am officially throwing in the towel this year. Due to mishaps beyond my control the car is down w/ a busted rearend. First time in 5 years I won't be making the trek. I thought about hitching a ride w/ someone, but it just wont be the same. Also, personal things in my life are changing @ the momemt so focus is on that as well. Take lots of great pics guys!! Next year w/out a doubt! G

Sorry to hear this Garrett. You are always welcome to tag along for the drive up and then drive my car on the Dragon if you'd like MY buddy is taking up his 2006 M3 so he has room for a passenger.
