AVI/WMV/MPG/ETC to DVD?

Would there be a simple/easy/cheap way of converting videofiles to DVD type format?

Ultimate goal is to take videos from computer and burn to DVD to hand out to friends. "Stick this in the DVD player and hit play" is much easier than "find X codec and Y player for your computer, if you have one, and you might need to upgrade it besides..."

I don't want "most", I want "all". "Most" doesn't cut it, because if there's a system that won't play it, then it will be the one that your friend/whoever happened to buy...

Burn to CD just so I can copy it to the HD and convert it anyway? Makes no sense.

The downside is you have to buy a new computer, even worse you have to buy a Mac. (I don't know anyone who's ever bought a new computer, it's always bits-n-pieces upgrades)

I burned some MPEGs to disc and popped 'em into the DVD player, they worked okay as long as it was under 2 minutes. After 2 minutes a video would lose time integrity. Not good when you want to make 2 hour videos...

I used to build my own computers. Heck, I'm still using my a64-3200, but from now on I'm buying Macs.
