Upgrade the turbo or downgrade the ECU

I'm about to pick up my first rx7 (87 Turbo II) early next week. Not just my first rotary powered car, but this is my first experience with any kind of forced induction, so forgive me if any of these questions seem ignorant.

Now apparently this car has an Rtek ECU set up for a t3/t4 turbo, but now is running with the stock turbo. It's also supplemented by a 255lph walbro and injectors (size im not sure, Im planning to call him tonight after work to verify this).

First question, I have no idea which stage of tune is used in conjuction with a t3/t4, but is it safe to run this set up for any extended period of time? I can only imagine how rich it's running...

Second, which would benefit me more, sending the ECU to have it set to run with a stock turbo, or upgrade to a t3/t4? Now obviously upgrading the turbo will net me more power, but cost is a concern is well. I was thinking I would downgrade until Im ready to spring for a big turbo and FMIC setup, but if for not much more I can slap on a t3/t4 then that may make more sense. I suppose t3/t4s arent too expensive these days... Let me know your thoughts!

Download the .................naw. Call the owner and ask him what version of the RTEK he has installed. Then things can be figured out. As you wait for the answer from him, read the DIGITAL TURNING site and download the manuals. Then again, which manuals/version.

And find out for sure what size the injectors are while your at it.

I would add that you can't just add a t3/t4 turbo. If the seller gave you that impression, he's misinforming you either out of ignrance or deceit. If the stock turbo is on the car, that means it's on the stock turbo manifold, which is has a proprietary flange (it is neither t3 or t4). So you can't go buy a t3/t4 turbo without getting a t3/t4 manifold, oil line and exhaust down pipe (as the manifold will move the location of the turbo) and some other stuff I'm forgetting. Expensive.

You can go hybrid and get a BNR turbo, where you send out your stock turbo and get it modified. There's a lot of info on this.

I'm trying to make this a clear as possible so you get what I'm saying, but really you need to get more info and read up on the Rtek you have. Do some research, the answers are easy.

If you get me the serial number (should be on a sticker on the lid of the ECU) I can tell you exactly what's in it.

Do you have any idea how vague "t3/t4" is when describing a turbo?

you should have throatpunched the previous owner. I would have....only after signing the title and getting the keys though.
