Timing Retard question...

I am still messing around with my timing maps and was wondering if anyone has data logged their timing retard and how does this affect the overall timing maps?

Right now, I am running less timing at low rpm. Then it builds up to about common numbers at redline. 10 @ idle to 38 at 7k.

Below is a log I took today. Don't mind my DC's, I will be upgrading soon to 1200's or maybe 1000's, plus most of the time I don't rev past 5.5k anyways.

Looking at the second graph you can see my numbers are 16, 6, -24.9. When I compare this to my maps, both leading and trailing look okay. But it seems like the timing retard value is ignored and not used at all. How can this be? Can some one better explain this?

Also, is there a way to estimate HP by using the airflow numbers in the datalog?

I've never seen timing retard do anything. The AFM values vary between cars. I made 323 at only 880 afm value. After like 700 or so I think the computer adds based on boost and rpm.

I have logged it but never actually had it register any numbers. I can try and test it when I get home and post up a log of what happens.

I'm guessing that the timing values are what values you have in the map, but the retard is how much its pulling from those values, so if lead timing is at 16.8 and retard is at -24.9 actual timing is 8.1 BTDC. I am just guessing tho. Turbo2liter should be able to confirm this.

You sure are pumping some airflow! And that DC woah! What are you running for injectors?
I don't know about estimating HP, but what kind of setup are you running for 900's at 10psi ?

Post up zipped pdb files, we can actually check out your log.

I'm currently running a S5 motor, S5 Hybrid TO4B turbo, 550/850, supra fuel pump, K&N Filter, HKS Wastegate Actuator, 3" turbo back exhaust with CAT and full emissions.

Boost controller was off for this pull, so only the spring.

Based upon my DC, for this pull, I am guesstimating about 280 - 300hp...

there is a knock control module as well but I'm not sure how it works...

Huh, It does appear that your Timing retard value does change. I tried whacking my sensor when I got home and nothing changed at all. I wonder if my knock sensor is bad. says 24.9 across the board???

yours does drop(or raise) to -19.3 @ 3736rpm @ 10.4psi @ 13.02 afr with lead timing at 11.2

I dunno... but 102 inj DC is crazy. was that a 4th gear pull?

It was a 4th gear pull.

Maybe I'll try pulling some timing to see if I can get the retard not to change.

All of my driving is under 5.5k, so I am not really worried about the DC's. The motor only sees 6k on data log pulls. I will be getting some 1200's or 1000's in the near future. Once those are in, I will start to tune up to 7k.

Driving on the street right now is fun enough revving up to 5k. I am not even in the sweet spot of the motor and turbo.

Can't wait for the car to be done with some track time!!!
