Rtek Ease of installing a rtek chip?
Ease of installing a rtek chip?
So anything i should know b4 i order a chip? im fairly confident since ive got experience with soldering from r/c cars etc.. Just looks a lil intimidating.
Be sure to have a solder sucker (similar to the thing to suck out baby boogers), and you want to be sure that you have unsoldered all the pins before trying to take it out, it should almost fall out.
Good luck, I think it was pretty easy.

You need GOOD equipment. The radioshack $5 soldering iron isn't going to cut it.
Not to scare you, but we've had several ECUs come back to us after a self-install gone bad...
What Nick said about it just falling out is right on. It's VERY easy to rip up traces if you don't make sure the solder is completely out on both ends of ALL the holes.

hmm i got a 15 and a 30 watt radio shack soldering iron, seems decent. my experience is from rc cars etc..
most extreme thing ive soldered was a resistor onto my pc video card like this

Use your iron to *add* solder (make sure you are using good electronics solder, not plumbing solder) before you use the solder sucker. Adding solder will add flux too which will make it easier to heat the pin all the way through the hole. If you dont get all the solder out the first time, fill the hole back in with new solder. You'll never get the pin to heat properly if you dont.
ill probably go pick up a new soldering iron, this 25w radio shack one sucks *i have this and a 15w radio shack one that ive had for a while, yeah they do suck*.
gonna try to make it to electronics warehouse b4 they close tomarrow after work. 25w should be good enough?

Yes, the bottom side.
Once the solder is out of the hole, make sure you can see light through all the holes. And dont use anything but your fingers to pull the chip out.
I dont know how many watts my iron is...I think it's 80 watts, but it's also temperature controlled... my main soldering station is over $1200 so don't expect much from RS.

sweet just picked up a weller 25w iron.. i got a few desoldered already wiht the braid.. really not hard.
my initial problem was attempting this with that crappy radioshack soldering iron. it wasnt transfering heat to the tip very well.
