about to go to 2.1 Have a few questions about the Palm
So Ive been trying to get everything ready before I send my ECU out. I bought a PALM V off Ebay and it came with a cradle/charger with a serial port. I know I have to buy a Hotsync cable to connect the PALM to the Rtek and I also read that I have to download some files/programs and transfer them to my palm.
The problem is I dont have a serial port on my laptop. Can I get one of these.... ?

Also, Do I have to be in my car and connected to the Rtek to edit a map? Or can I build a map on my couch and then hop in my car and sync it? The reason I ask is because Ive heard they take a while to edit and the screen on my PALM looks like itd be terrible in daylight.
What Palms are you guys using and how do you like them? I may buy something better than the Palm V. It was only $20 anyway.

I'm using an m515 with my RTeks.
Had some problems getting a usb-serial adapter to work with Vista and Windows7 consistently. I am using a infrared dongle and have had better results. I can keep the charger plugged in so it won't die while syncing multiple /large datalogs.
You need to be connected to the RTek to modify settings, but not to view logs.

got a link to this infared dongle? I have windows 7 also.
Nevermind. I probably made a mistake buying the V. I just bought a m515 w/ a usb cable. Looks like a much nicer unit.

So Ive been doing some more reading.....
Im now 2 palm pilots deep and still cant connect them to my laptop. I have 64 bit on all my laptops.
When using that IR dongle, how does the Palm transmit the IR to the reciever(the part that plugs in your usb drive)?
What version of windows is known to sync properly via usb to Palm Desktop 6.2? I may just get an older laptop off craigslist.
This is getting a bit foolish.

The black plastic piece on the top is the Palm's IR port. Aim that at the dongle.
On your computer go to Hotsync Manager>Settings and check "Infrared"
On the Palm go to Hotsync and change the drop down menu to "IR to PC/Handheld" and click the icon on the screen.
Try pressing the little "Reset" button on the back and syncing again.
You might be able to get it to work under Windows Virtual PC/XP Mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir.../download.aspx) but I haven't tried that yet.
