when is a 5 inch intercooler necessary

when is a 5 inch intercooler necessary

meaning if someone has a gt42 turbo with lets say 27psi or 30psi of boost

is it worth it to have a 5 inch thickness intercooler or when is it necessary to put one on a rx7?

dunno from experience, but I would think you'd be losing so much air velocity through the big bitch that it wouldn't do much more for cooling. Imagine trying to blow 5 inches!

I would say that at higher boost levels, you'd have way better luck with air/water. Plus it's more efficient all around...

call up bell intercoolers, the tech support there will guide you through what you need.

no offense but i dnt have that problem cause i dnt use a intercooler how big is the one you have??

The only way to properly answer the question is to log you AIT's.. If your seeing super high AIT's then its time to step up your FMIC.. Other factors play a role as well.. Fuel used, Boost levels etc,..

Btw.. I have also seen 4" FMIC that work better than 5".. you also have to look at the core youyr using as well.. All cores are not created equal..

I would think an intercooler with more air contact is better than thinkness.

Surface area is as important as thickness.. You can have a wide and tall FMIC but if its too thin it will still heat soak.. You need the best of both always..

I heard Rotaryboyz is really good at blowing 5"'s and more!

Agreed. Logging AITs is the way to know.

Actually to properly use the right core size, is to provide a turbocharger compressor map and figure out your maxmium boost levels according to air flow. Then heat rejection will be needed to size the correct fin/tube combo on a cooler. These are the ways to professionally size a heat exchanger. It's not all about size, it has alot to do with the design of the fin and tube as well as the surface area not all about thicknesses as that can yield to greater pressure drops the larger or thicker the core.

I have a stock evo 8 intercooler thats i will put in as a semi front mount. JUst in front of the rad. for shorter piping.

HOw would the evo 8 cooler hold out against my BNR3 stock port setup.?
