Screwed up my tranny at the strip

Went out to a local strip a couple Fridays ago to make a few passes. Car was running great. I was letting out at the 1/8th to keep from getting kicked out. It was getting late so i decided to make a full pass, got a good launch (1.5x) and ran through the 1-3rd. Went to hit 4th and it wouldn't shift into gear. It was just locked out and i hit the gear pretty hard. Started slowing down and couldn't get it into any gear. Then at the end of the track i got it back into 3rd then 1-4th worked, pulled it into the pits and let it cool down a little.

Went to leave and I couldn't get it into reverse, same feeling when i tried to hit 4th. So i have first through 4th but can't get it into 5th or reverse. I drove it home like that. I'm guessing something small is either bent or broken. The gears that do work, work fine, no noise and the action is smooth. Any ideas on what went wrong? So, the tranny has to come out, but i'm not sure where to go from there. I've never taken a tranny apart and I don't think i want to attempt it.

Also, since its coming out, is there anything i can do to make it stronger?

I've looked at tranny options, but there just doesn't seem like many choices out there for street 7s. I'd love to go with a straight cut dog box but the money and noise are going to keep me that for a long time.

My old trans did that also i belive its caused by the 5th gear sincro problem, i replaced it with a j spec and like it better. Its cheaper than a rebuild.

Shorter 5th, Hell yeah!!
I can't wait to sell my blood to get one...

I took mine apart a few years ago to do the 5th synchro fix and said F*ck-it half way through....it's not worth it. I ended up getting using an old one that came with my core engine I bought.

I've rebuilt trannys before, but the FD one was horrible.
It's still sittin there, disassembled.....staring at me......
stupid *** transmission....

nah...I'm just retarded, I doubt you'd have problems like I did.
You actually know what you're doin.

While your at it, you should replace that spring that puts the shifter in neutral when in 1st or 2nd gear...
Don't remember what it's called, but that'll give a more solid shift to 3rd.
Ray @ MalloyMazda has the best prices for almost everything and will know what it is.

Whatever it is...goodluck Jon,
Be ready by next summer so we can go to the tracks.
I want to check out the one in Indy.

Are the j specs any stronger? What about a 99+ one?

I dont think there stronger but i dont know. From what ive seen if you want a strong rx7 trannie its a big step $$$$$$ and not to street friendly. The j spec is nice in town you can use 5th at about 45 mph. And in the 1/4 if you hit 5th gear thats above 145 mph, i dont think so! Good luck i would just get a new trannie with good fluid and rip **** and not worry till it goes out again.

Erniet is selling his PPG tranny, step it up !

My transmission did the same on my 10.00 pass. I couldn't get the car into reverse. I sat in the car and had someone slow push my car backwards while I went from 3rd to reverse. I think that was the sequence but anyhow, it worked. I finally got reverse back and it shifted okay again.

Lets face it, not much you can do with the stock transmission but keep replacing them when they break.

Check out the thread in the 20b forum, someone is making a kit to bolt a supra 6 speed into our cars now.

I think i'm just going to fix whats wrong with my current tranny. I found someone who will probably fix it for cheap and i'll just put it back in the car and see how it goes.

That would rock! I'd be all over that. Any idea on what supra trannies go for?

By all means, correct me if I am wrong, but I've read quite a few times that the 2nd gen series 5 Turbo II trannies are more sturdy and stronger than the 3rd gen tranny. The same goes for the differentials as well.

^I've heard that as well.

Also, look into cryogenic treatment. That'll strengthen things up quite a bit.
