My diff broke

So all my bragging about my OEM 100K + diff with 100's of passes is over. My last day at the track I was told I was one wheel spinning. I also had some bad noise coming from the rear. So i pulled it all apart yesterday and found the axles fine and didnt really see any broken teeth or cracks. However I had a good bit of metal in the case mainly in the front by between the pinion and front flange. Looked like a spacer but was enough metal to be 2-3. I have not identified the broken items yet but curious if anyone knew what usually breaks in that area?

Next I need to decide what direction to go. I want the car back on the road for Deals gap in 3 weeks. In the end I want to go with a proven Kaaz-raceshop axles or cobra conversion but for now I need it back on the road. Is it worth me trying my TII LSD and 4.44 gear combo for the time being? Or should I just stick a complete stock diff in until I make the upgrade?

more pics

So I pulled the LSD apart and there was damage on the gears inside. Here are a couple pics. These are the 2 gears and washers that sit between the housing and gear that side on each side of the LSD and the axles go in side these. Both were chewed up pretty bad but I noticed only one had a washer on the end were the other was missing. Whats crazy is all the broken parts made it to the very front of the Diff. In fact it all was between the front flang and pinion bearing. I cant believe I was able to make another 6.90 pass and drive it to work 4-5 times after this happened.

Another thing that I cant believe I didnt know until I pulled this all apart was how much tire rub my car showed in the rear top fenders.

It was just a matter of time. You are one of the very few that could get that many passes. Must be the whimpy horsepower numbers. - kidding.

Depends if I buy a complete Diff or just housing. I wouldnt mine trying the TII and 4.44 gears. I have talked to a local about a KAAZ/race axle set up out of a LS1 turbo FD. HE is going solid rear.

On my FD rear it stripped the spider gears on my 2nd pass with slicks. Went with a s4 t2 diff out of a parts car i had, put the FD ring gear on and have about 12 passes(about 8 10sec passes) and love it. Luckly i used the same shims and the gear mesh was good but it depends diff by diff.

love the carnage! For price-wise, going TII LSD might be a nice step, considering how many passes you got out of your stock diff, you're obviously launching just right not to break too much ****, and the TII might carry you for some time.

What did you weld up? I was wishing there was a sleeve that would fit in there and act the same. Tire size I run is 26/10.5 and also have a set of 26/11.5's. (Which if you compare the 10.5's to the 11.5's you see the 11.5's are taller.)

Struts are way stiff and are the wrong combo but arte JIC FLT STIFF! MAkes me unload 2nd gear bad. I just need to raise the rear up a bit.

haha dunno i was told to do it from a good irs drag racing source on this forum , i havnt got there yet, ive still got my lsd going good, but as soon as its out in a few weeks ill be sorting out a weld up job, ill show you what i came up with when done, it may be a bitch as its not like a normal open centre weld up job but im sure i can sort something out .
And ive only got 26x8.5 x15 inch units, no rubbing yet that ive seen, and ive also got hks hypermax d units with super stiff springs in it to, so far ive been ok wiht no unloading tyres but then again im not running much power through yet ,

Just get a Kaaz and use 4.1

I am set on trying the 4.44's after talking with Ari. He swears by the 4.33's so we will see. I will end up with either a Kaaz or Cobra conversion in the end..

Youll probably be needing to shift into 5th in the 1/4 with those gears but Im sure you probably already know that and still want them.

You will be able to run in the 140's in 4th gear with those gears.
I ran the same et but picked up 5 mph in the 1/4 with the 430's.

I dont think so. I have been trapping 133mph at about 7100-7300 in the 1/4. I shift around 8500. I think the 4.44's will be perfect in the 1/4 but bad in the 1/8th as I will have to shift to 4th right before the traps(1/8). Only time will tell. I know a few guys on here believe in the 4.10's but Ari is the man so I am going to give it a try.

Didn't Dan with the Jigsaw RX7 try the 4.44's only to switch back to the 4.3's? I can't find the thread, but I thought he was doing best on the 4.3's.

I have spoken with Dan a few times also. Bottom line is I have these 4.44's sitting in the garage along with a TII lsd. My 4:10 pinion is toast along with my stock lsd and case is also bad so I have another case coming (Thanks to David Jerome) and seems like I might as well give them a try. My plan is to build another unit either with a KAAZ or a cobra conversion and I will know what gear I want then.
Also if Busted can pull to 140mph in 4th with them then it should be close. I will surely post my time slips along with data lods showing all in a few weeks.

Cool, I thought you were going to have to order it, definitely worth a try. I'm really interested in seeing the change in ET's and mph. You're on 26 x 11.5 ET Streets right?

Yeah, have both 10.5 and 11.5 mounted up. I swap back and forth.

Good to know, I wasnt 100% sure about that as Ive never tried gears with such a high ratio.

Edit that. My logs never showed above 6700rpm at the end of the 1/4. So these gears are sounded better and better. But I have a question on confirming the gears. I always thought you divided the ring by the pinion (41/10=4:10). Thats what the oem ones were. The rx8 gears I have are also 41 ring but 9 pinion= 4.55?? I am guessing this isnt the most percise way?
