I plan to still road race mine with the solid axle. I've seen some panoz track cars with ford nine inch solids in the back still own some irs cars. Opinions are like *** holes so unless you have driven a solid axled fd you don't have any idea how it handles.

Wink

It will all depends , if you set up a solid rearend for road racing it will work perfect at the road cource and if you do a almost undertructible rearend set up for drag racing you can launch the car @ 11,000 RPM without worrying about breaking your rear.

I got a 3rd gen FD R1 hard top for sale,no longer interested in build.I had a 3/4 chassis frame bult for modified class with huge 14x32 slicks, pretty much the outer body is clean with functioning doors ,stock firewall, stock front chassis and hatch.........OG black paint plus windows.I have pink with me also.

I only want to get rid of this shell for $1K, i wish i could have this car running but funding was problem.

lol I like Opinions are like *** holes saying lol
No I havent driven a solid axel FD, but I have owned enough other solid axel sports cars and driven them on the road to know whats best for corners.

Mazda made a handling beauty in FD RX7 with its multi link IRS suspension very good recipe for circuit racing, look at the times the modified ones get in Japan in the time attack series, a solid axel car would not get close to those times fact.

But this thread is about whats best for a 3rd Drag setup, yes solid axel cars will be quicker down the strip and much more reliable and into the 8s easy.

But if you want a car that just does 9s and you want to circuit race as well, in my own humble opinion stick to IRS, get a Kazz diff, uprated axels, diff brace,Petit launch kit job done. We have a guy in the UK Chris Impey before he tubbed his car as he wants to get into the low 8s high 7s now, was running IRS for a couple of years and was doing low 9s regularly and reliable.

So it depends what you want from the car and how you use it as to what setup you want.

This is a pointless argument.....

Dude, people have a hard enough time breaking into the 10's. How many of those are actively competing in road racing as well?

Now, how many people are running 9's and competitively road racing?

Sure, ernie made a trip to the road coarse.... but he was drunk and didn't realize where he was at

^ not only that but the setups are totally different. Different gearing, shocks, etc. There 's no way your going to have a 9 second drag car and do well with road racing with that setup. Pic one and stick with. Put a solid rearend in and be done with it.

Thanks for all the input guys. Also, I was thinking about getting rid of the tein flex and go with a more "proven" approach as what Ernie suggested, which was Eibach springs and tokico/koni shocks.

Who else is out there runnign Drag and getting good results? What suspension info can you give..

On another note, I personally don;t want to do a rear end swap............Yet. I would like to see what we can do with the IRS setup first.

Thanks!

What about the Cobra / Ford 8.8 IRS swaps?

I'm getting closer and closer to getting my car running, and I'm starting to have nightmares on how I'm going to get it to hook up. Already got the 8.8 IRS rear with 3.27 gears, Tokico 5 ways, and Tein S-Techs.

I've heard you can fit a 28x11.5 wrinkle wall on the factory rims in an untouched fender well, so I'm HOPING that should be enough tire (for both sidewall and contact patch)

As long as your car is slammed, you should be able to run those tires.

Ok i found the line lock systems after finally being able to talk to a x drag racer. there are some in the JEGS catalog on line. so now my question is are there any pro/ cons to a particular brand. there is B&M, JEGS, HURST, MOROSO and TCI available. any in-puts would be helpfull. Maybe some suggestions on brake upgrade also please.

I had the summit brand. The solenoid wasn't very tight, it wouldn't hold pressure very long

I'm running one with the stock 3.55 I haven't run slicks on it mainly because I don't want to break anything in the middle of summer. I may slap some on in the fall and see what it will do. I would think the 3.27 would be too much gear for the 1/4, unless you thinking about topping out only in 3rd gear I guess.

I run the Hurst Line line. Works flawless.

If your dragging, the stock brakes with good pads and rotor should work fine.. well at least depending how fast your planning to go. I's say 9's and the stock stuff should be fine. I'm actually Planning to get rid of my Brakes to get the smaller 3rd gen brakes(the 2000 RS came with very big brakes) so that I can fit a 16" rim on the car.

so far most evey thing is stock. ive only changed a couple of things. right now im looking at running 18" rims. i still have stock brakes, but i have been shopping aroung and pricing kits. glad to hear that hurst is still doing a good job. it was actually the first set-up i looked at. did you drill a hole in the top of your shifter or did you have to find something specieal?

Actually your timing is good since we are in a process of building a drag fd. We are planing on getting close to mazfix 7.77 record or maybe beat it. The project is going to be started next week and hopefully get it done within 3 week. I will make a thread for that project soon.
