In regards to Jesus "Kilo" Padilla have any of you ever looked at the NHRA rules and what the weight breaks are for the all motor class.
FWD up to 2.2 liter is 1675lbs
2.21 - 2.4 1700lbs
2.41 - 2.6 1725lbs
RWD 2 rotor 1.3liters is 1950lbs
VW upto 2.6liters 1725
Now you tell me who is at a disadvantage NHRA officals don't know how to classify rotary engines and so they are penalized for that. You'll here arguments that a rotary is really a 2.6liter engine. No it isn't it is 1.3liters but if you want an engine to compare it to "it is like a 2.6liter engine". And if any of you have seen Kilos car and compared it to his competitors it's a joke. Yeah the backends worked but the car is all steel has all the factory glass and looks more like a street car than a race car. Look at the competition and they are tube framed, lexan windows and as much weight saving measures they can do. And the fact that he is beating factory sponsored cars hey that's just great I love an under dog. And just like any other racing sanctioning body out there they, NHRA bends the rules to accomodate what they perceive as being popular.

The problem is its not rotary guys that are supporting the NHRA, NOPI, ect ect racing sanctions. They want the winner to be someone that will get the fans all excited to they will continue coming and watching the events. Its just that simple. There just isnt enough rotary engine fan base.

surely the fact that the rotary powered cars and the honda's are running that closely tells you that the rules are about right ? like any sport if the outcome is just about a dead cert it becomes very dull. If the rotaries were runing 0.5 of a second faster than anyone else the class would surely die off as the non rotary folks would find another class.

so they have to penalize the best in order for the worst to compete. That makes sense in a weird kind of way. But when someone has been given an advantage and wins they need it to be bluntly pointed out that they were moreless given a headstart when they appear to totally forget that fact. There was an interview that really set me off last year by a person whose car was almost 300lbs lighter than Ken Scheepers. A mid season rule change that added weight to Ken's and lightened theirs changed a lot of outcomes. But to hear the interview you would have thought they did it all on their own.

I didnt know......

I do not know one single person that has bought a set of aluminum intermediate plates from RB. If these same Chevy people I know were rotary guys they would put down the $3600 for them. And instead of digging through high mileage motors forever trying to come up with the least of the worn rotor housings they would drop the $850 on those without hesitation just like they do for forged cranks, billet heads, titanium valves etc.

So to me as much as I love the rotary I think judging by our record as consumers of already available items on the market that Mazda would be nuts to invest much into these things.
All of you out there running the RB aluminum sides please post pics.[/QUOTE]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I never knew RB made these...I've been road racing since 92 and Mazda comp didnt offer such. So where (edition)in their mags do we see these side plates?I have the 1st gen mag, the 2nd and FD(thin).
Also when those guys are spending that money they are racing serious so why wouldnt that be the case for the rotary? Cant compare daily driving rotaries to an all out drag chevy. An all out drag rotary yes, but ,then are the R&B sideplates made for high boost and Nitrous or for NA road racing application?
Thanks

If you pull any year and go to "housings" they are listed for all years of RX7's. I have not checked the RX8 but I doubt it.
They have made these for a few years at least and have been in the catalogs as well.

Well the stuff sometimes seem a little high but for those with the cash you could make a superlight keg with those parts. The horsepower to weight ratio would be even more insane and I am sure the NHRA would outlaw them if they have not already.

All the big spenders are either aviation or racers for the most part. There are probably some of the guys with planes that would spend the money on your seals.

Are you saying they are penalizing the worst or that rotaries are being given the advantages in the class?

rotaries are the lightest in every other class. the only reason they're heavier in all motor is cuz they're rwd. if a newer piston rwd, meaning non vw, were to run the class they would weigh the same or probably more.

They will allow rotary starlets on the modify class, which should level the class out; at least there are a couple of capables cars, wether they bring them over to race is another issue. There are a couple of new projects that should make things somewaht interesting

1 - Dee's car
2 - Rafael "falito" Rivera coming (first tuner\racer to brake the 7 sec barrier) on a new (Rx-8?) chassis.
3 - Siguel's car was at the chassis shop (who knows what was changed )
4 - Ken S. new Rx8

And some others, I truely want to see that new PP + Turbo car that is coming out soon

3 rotor, he's done. They have one but I think they are more interested in all motor, where
the rotary is still very competitive. They don't even try to sell Haltech anymore, they are
all high on the power fc, going soft I guess.
This has more to do with Haltech pulling out of the US than RP going 'soft'. It was really convenient to have Haltech literally within 10 miles when the crap hits the fan. Now that they're no longer in the DFW metroplex, much less in the US at all, that support delay would probably be counterproductive to good business practice. It's really quite a shame since I have a E6K sitting on the shelf in the garage now.

Didn't think of that- thanks. I just got pissed at RP cause they steered me away from
Power fc and now they push it. I realize it's mainly because it has datalogit now and
better map sensor. Still, I just like to bitch- old habit. BTW MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
