whats so special about titanium exhaust??? Is it just the fact of haveing one and everybody will know that you paid $1000+ for it???? Is there a higher hp gain than ss exhaust???
its just for the weight savings and bragging rights, a 3 inch pipe, of any material will flow the same amount of air through it....all things being held constant.

I don't brag too much about my exhaust right.
Seriously though, the muffler is really light and the 4" piping looks beautiful. BTW, mine hasnt oxidized due to the high heat of the rotary. On the other hand, my apex gt was gold after a few days of use.

Titanium is pimp. Much lighter and higher specific strength. My wedding band and watch are both titanium, I jost love the look of it.

SS is "lighter" than mild steel mainly because you can use less material. Titanium is a lighter material, and I don't know if it is used with the same thickness as SS or not, but titanium systems are lighter than SS generally.

how much was it Gene? I was more or less referring to the all titanium , piping and all for 2K. The titanium muffler might save you 3 pounds over a same size stainless muffler, but if the pipes stainless then saving 3 pounds and spending a little more might be worth it, but paying 2K for an all titanium system and saving 12 pounds is a little much.

"Titanium, when pure, is a lustrous, white metal. It has a low density, good strength, is easily fabricated, and has excellent corrosion resistance. It is ductile only when it is free of oxygen. The metal, which burns in air, is the only element that burns in nitrogen.
Titanium is resistant to dilute sulfuric and hydrochloric acid, most organic acids, most chlorine gas, and chloride solutions.
Alloys of titanium are principally used for aircraft and missiles where light weight, strength and ability to withstand extremes of temperature are important.
Titanium is as strong as steel, but 45% lighter. It is 60% heavier than aluminum, but twice as strong.
The metal has excellent resistance to sea water and is used for propeller shafts, rigging, and other parts of ships exposed to salt water.
The price of titanium metal powder (99.95%) is about $100/lb. "
Why for exhaust?
- It won't rust out.
- It can EASILY handle the heat.
- It is lighter than steel when used by the same volume.
- It is Stronger than steel when used by the same volume.
- To get the same strength as steel, titanium would be VERY light.
- It looks very nice, and not ricey at all.
-It matches my $600 watch....

correction :
Titanium IS NOT as strong as steel, depending on what do you mean by strong, tensile or yield strength steel wins hands down. Of course things change when you have cold working, etc... but the same thing goes for steel.
Steel, aluminum, and titanium all have reasonably close specific strength. Steel is 3X stronger than aluminum and weighs 3X as much. Titanium is in the middle.
Titanium does held very well in high temperatures though, holding its strength way past melting point of most metals.

FOR YOUR INFO.
On F-14, F-18 and many other aircraft, where the exhaust comes out of a jet engine also know as
"TURKEY FEATHERS" is made of Titanium.....
The only bummer about titanium is its brittle...
Thats why they dont make a hole lot out of
it, plus expensive, and very hard to work
with...
Hope this helps

Canman beat me to it. Titanium is hard to work with.
And they use thinner piping with titanium than they would with steel, so they can have similar strength, yet remarkable weight loss to make the exhaust seem impressive, check out some jap tuners (not rotary) like www.topsecretjpn.com
I don't know why it's not even close to as popular as it is for skylines, and other high end cars, so far I've only seen HKS and JIC Magic have Titanium Exhaust for RX's
BTW I have a Titanium Fork and Spoon I use all de time
I got it from a mountain climbing store

i wanted to have a sword made out of titanium but they said it was too much of a headache to make. But i am sure for the right price they will buy some advil and make a sweet ginsu for u. Anyways i was thinking one crazy day, what if i had my car, chassis, engine and everything that might be metal be made out of titanium. That would be awesome. If i had 50 million.

In one of the last issues of Turbo Magazine there was a 3rd gen with full titanium exhaust. It's magnufactured in japan by some company. You can check out the car at Turbomagazine.com in the features section.

SS exhausts only last about 7 to 10 years. Salt is evil...Titanium is more brittle? HUH? Titanium is extremely flexy... bike parts made from Ti are typically not that much lighter than a quality steel or aluminum part, because while the metal weighs less for the volume, you need more volume to keep the thing from flexing like hot noodles. And even then, it still sucks. (Ask anyone who's tried an all-Ti handlebar... YUCK!)
