At what point will lapping not help

I was looking over both my end housings and noticed a couple scratches. My irons were out of my hands for a while being ported so it could have happened then. It isn't wear marks because of the way the scratches look and I dont remember seeing them after I pulled the motor apart. From what I have read lapping is more for grooves from seals but will this help in my case.

Thanks,
Chris

Where are the scratches? If they are around the intake port then don't worry about it at all, it'll make no difference. If they are around the combustion area then it might be good to lap them. But it depends on how deep the scratches are. If they are just light scratches, then leave it alone, if they are gouged in like a groove from a seal then lap them.

It isn't close to the port... well one is in the area but doesn't even look like a grinding mark. I know because I have slipped working on some other parts. The second is more towards the trailing plug area. It looks like the scratches might have been made from the irons falling over or maybe nocking into each other. So your thinking that lapping will take them out?

Lapping would easily take them out, they sound very shallow. If you can't get your fingernail into the scratch, then I wouldn't lap it. The problem with lapping is it takes the hard nitride coating off the plate, which makes it a lot easier for the seals to make grooves in the plate. So unless it's a real gouge or seal groove, I wouldn't lap it.

Yeah I was searching on the forum some and found a company who would nitride the housings again. I can catch my fingernail on them though. I will try to get pics but its hard to get an idea unless in person.
