What Apex Seals, that is the question

As the topic says, im looking for some new seals to use on my car.

Atm im using 3mm Hurely seals. They are now on there 3rd season. After a rebuild this winter due to a broken sideseal, the compression on the front rotor is way to low. At cold cranking it gives me 45 psi of compression.

So im looking into getting new seals this year, and try somthing else then hurley.

The car is a singel turbo engine, with large street port. And the car get's tracked alot. Car has a T04E atm but will be changed out with a T04Z pushing high boost.

So the seals must withstand heavy abuse. The hurley seals have had alot of punishment over the last 2 years.

Id like to get the oppinion from u guys. Im limited to experience with only Stock Mazda and Hurley seals.

NRS ceramics or Ianetti is all I would use in my own engines, everything else is pretty poor by comparison.

Just looking at your sig with all the Autronic gear it is obvious you have a brain and understand quality over hype

Go with the NRS, I have many happy customers here using them and the best thing I can tell you is I use them in my own engines I build & have NEVER had a problem.

Sven is building me a custom 2 piece set for my new motor and I will also be using Cermet A rotor housings too, if your after durability and power then you simply cant wish for any better

Stock mazda seals work great for me, anyone else have experience with goopy seals, PTS seals, Atkins, and the RA super seals? I do know that Ken Sheepers and Demetrios karagiannis swear by the Super seals, they use/used them in their 7 second drag cars.

Most the aftermarket seals are ductile iron and the softer the metal, the less prone they are to breaking, but more prone to warpage under high heat. Ceramic are the way to go when all the tuning is spot on though.

Hehe

Iv'e been verry happy with my SM4, it's so easy to tune. And i love the auto tune system. 1 Hour of various driving and the map was more then good enough to drive and use on a race track. Will need some dyno tuning to get out the small hicups in the map, and to tune the ignition map correctly but.

But i have decided to go with the NRS Seals, as they would suit my purpose well. Goal is to dyno the new T04Z at about 25 PSI on pump gas.

How did you find hooking up the SM4, do you have the oil metering pump wired in as well?

Yes they are a fantastic computer ! Tuning features on them that leave everything else for dead realy

Ive not used oil metering pump for years, and im never going back.

Running expensive Syntetich oil in the engine, and 2 stroke in the fuel. And i don't get the hazle of wiering up the metering pump

Jupp don't think im ever changing ECU.

It's been wonderfull so far.

Starting my old engine again tomorrow. So gonna tune it alittle on the street again on sunday i think.

Are you running 2mm or 3mm seals? If 2mm, what springs are you planning to use? I want to use them, too, but it will be a few months more before Sven has hard coated springs in 2mm width.

Hey Rice, how much experience do you have with the Cermet A and Cermet B coatings?

Just looking for a little real world experience as I am leaning heavily towards this option also.

Zero, but I had Zero with NRS ceramic seals over 2+ years ago when NO ONE ELSE of note was using them and look where that bandwagon is now !!!

I strongly feel Marc's cermet products will be the same and will be testing my own set soon enough, on paper it has the goods and he is willing to back his manufacturing stds and product quality, so thats about all I can say at this stage.

Its the tech used in 1991 by Mazda so its not as if its an unproven combination but like with everything in this game people sit on the fence till someone else does it so yeah.

Good luck getting anything from him after sending your money for the housings. In the couple of dealings I have had w/ them customer service doesn't exist.

The housings have held up well, but the cost was almost as much as brand new housings which I can have in a week, instead of months.

I just got done rebuilding my engine due to a bearing spin. It has been close to two years since last time I rebuilt it using RA Superseals on my very abused daily driver carb second gen turbo. All I can say is that the apex seals are intact and housings are in perfect condition...
