Question water-to-air intercoolers

are water-to-air intercoolers more eficient?

and what are the upsides and downsides of these intercoolers?

and are they good for street driving?

thanx

1) Yes, substantially.

-- Upsides of air-to-water IC's are the larger Delta-T's as well as intercooling medium (much denser using water as it as a specific heat index of 4.1:1 compared to air mass per mass)

-- Downsides of air-to-water IC's are their complexity and slight need for micro-management during usage at the track (dumping out old water, adding in a new bag of ice in the tank, recirculating through to cool the core off, etc.)

I use one for street driving and it's terrific -> just make sure the system has large enough lines, a good enough flowing water pump (high volume, low pressure), and a good enough radiator in the front. It *will* work as well as an air to air unit.

Not if you put anti-freeze in the water. If you are running an "ice chest" system with dry ice, you would need anti-freeze anyway, as temperatures can get down below -60F. Discounting the freezing issue, you would still probably want some type of corrosion inhibitor, and anti-freeze has this property also.

BNR is working on a liquid-to-air intercooler system for the third gen. Should work well.
