VTEC is a marketing gimmick that lets you have two cams in the engine (basicaly) and switch from one to the other on the fly.

If you just had the 'low' cam the engine would fall on its face at 6K... if you just had the "high" cam it wouldnt be streetable or get good gas mileage. So its good on a small NA engine that has to rev high to make its power but isnt a pig at low rpms.

Staged ports on a rotary do a similar thing... makes it volumetrically efficient throughout the revrange.

But yeah, VTEC lets you have a high strung engine that can get some manners at low rpms. If say, I built a static cam engine for an 8K redline, it would idle real rough, and high, and get **** MPG and specific torque (BMEP) at the lower rpms.

Vtec is a third lobe per each cylinder which is always in contact with a Vtec rocker arm which is activated at 75psi using a electronic solenoid...both cams are because its a dual cam motor..1 cam for intake valves and 1 cam for exhaust valves.

a SOHC Vtec honda motor is 5 lobes per cylinder 2 for intake 2 for exhaust 1 for Vtec its works similar to the Dohc Vtec cams.. a Sohc Vtec cam is basically 2 diffrent cams.

to look at it another way look at it like this...a DOHC honda vtec engine has 4 cams. 2 diffrent profiles per cam

Why would you want a F20C in a FC unless youre a honda fan?

Im not hating on it but just curious as to why youd do that instead of a PP rotary :P

My opinion on the white FC in the pics is that i don't like othe companys **** in other company's chasis. that's just me though you buy or use the car because you believe that it is good for some reason or it looks good or whatever. Now i personally have been responsible for the build up of many performance Hondas I use to have a shop in fact but I would never put the F20C1 in my FB. i bought the FB to learn about the rotary engine and unfortunetely the carberator that goes with this beast. I also wanted to own a rear driver so I can find out if I can get the skills like I have handling FWD cars at the limit. I suppose an AWD car will be next. It took me a long time to decide to bite the bullet and buy this little FB. So far I like it a lot the power isn't even all that bad for it's weight stock. We'll see where this goes.

Im glad you bought a FB.. but the FB isnt just about the engine. And nothing is 'unfortunate' about carburators, theyre cheap and easy to tune, and dont require a laptop or a computer. If you **** up or mis-size one, they can have **** throttle responce, gas mileage, or power, but then again if you **** up a computer that can happen, too.

Just because you dont understand something, or its new to you, doesnt mean it sucks. I mean ****, youre getting into rotaries for the first time...

Now, as far as your opinion on 'one companies **** in another companies chassis' - thats fine, just dont go shitting on other peoples swaps. Its an opinion and you should recognize that that is all it is. The Cobra started as a ford v8 in a english roadster, and became a legend. Swapped RX-7s are just a rebirth of that - someone in a garage making a exotic-slayer for peanuts.

Also, uh.. RWD cars are a lot more fun at the limit if you know what to do. Just dont freak out and stomp the brake, that only makes wagging your tail out even worse. Theyre also a hell of a lot easier to launch off a line because they lean on the tires that are putting down the power, not away from. Thats a very nice thing!

I'm not an incredible moron tahk you very much, there are some very stupid ppl out there that honestly think the 13B has cams. Many though the FD was powered by a twin turbo V6. I had no way of telling that you were indeed not a moron, my apologies. Gald to hear we don't have idiots on this forum, but thank you for welcoming me so warmly. I've been posting 2 weeks and the name calling begins. thank you.

Now, take this with a grain of salt because I dont know just how much Mazda had to neuter the Renesis becuase of the EPA bullshit regarding CAT longevity, requiring cooler EGTs by richening up the mix and thus killing power...

But a F20 has more output than a Renesis... and the F20 is at a smaller displacement, stock.

</devils_advocate>

P.S. - whats the output of a properly chipped renesis, or one on standalone?
