would putting extra cargo in the back seat and trunk help with traction in winter days? what about rain?

yes, similar to putting sandbags in the back of pickup trucks. weighting the back end would somewhat help with traction, however snow tires will be more beneficial.

I guess michelin would be my best bet? My parents 2012 dodge van uses 17" all season but they have a brand new pair of winter tires sitting right now. Im wondering if the FC could work with that?

I've used Nokien Hakkapeliitta and bridgestone blizzaks in the past. Whatever works works, just make sure you get the proper tire size for whatever your wheel setup is.
