Thermal Pellet....

I first posted in the 2nd gen section but recieved no replies. Here goes.

After reading about the mod on Ted's site and recieving an Atkins pellet with my rebuild here's my question:

Could you just plug the bypass hole and discard the pellet all together?

I don't know if the shaft is hard there. But if not, why not just tap it and Loc-Tite a set screw in it? Even though the heat of welding scares me. Could a good TIG welder just weld it shut? Hole is pretty small. Maybe 3mm?

Whadaya think?

You put the original spring on the bigger end of the pellet, and the small longish end goes into the eccentric bolt.

Welding on the eccentric is not a good idea. It's hardened by heat treating. Welding will make it brittle.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll just use my Atkins pellet.

I was just looking at the e-shaft after doing the oil-jet mod and thought "If a guy could just plug that hole (the bleed hole in the shaft), he could eliminate the pellet all together. Was just a thought.

The '85 and earlier shafts don't have the bypass hole, so you can go to an earlier shaft to totally eliminate the need for a pellet.
