is there anyway to test the octane of gas?

So my friend and I both recently blew our motors. His car had only 6000 miles on the motor and I only had 15000 miles on mine. Since our cars have been dyno tuned and I have been driving it for years without any problems at all, my mechanic theorized taht we both got a bad tank of gas which caused or motors to blow. The reason being is that we both got our gas the same day at the same station and blew out motors the exact same day (what are the chances of that kind of coincidence?). Although it seems unlikely to get a bad tank, I don't want to dismiss that as a cause for engine failure since there is no other good explanation. I know this is kind of a long shot but does anyone know if it's possible to test the octane in my gas tank after I have extracted it?

How long has it been since you purchased the gas?

The same thing has happened to me. Car ran it's *** off without any problems for a long time. Filled up at BP one morning and 5 minutes later, boom.

Not that it helps now, but a 55 gallon drum of 100 in my shed takes care of that. If you buybit that way, you avoid 1/3 of the price due to no taxes...

When you buy 100 by the drum what does it break down to by the gallon? I can get 112 for $4.50/gal and $119 for $5.00/gal from a pump at a local gas station.

That's illegal.

Although I guess no one would notice since it's not like it has the dye that non-taxed diesel has.
