T5 tranny

I'm looking for a T5 tranny for a friend and I'm wondering how much they cost with bell housing, pressure plate and everything else.

A real live working T5 transmission is about a grand nowadays. They're rare, since the usual mode is for the trans to break, then get thrown away.

Pressure plate depends on the flywheel, not the transmission.

Where? Let me know and I'll borrow money and buy them all up by you and sell them left and right here.

Chevy T5s are rare because the ones with good ratios were only available behind the 305 and everyone bought the automatic-only 350. Ford T5s are rare because everyone races Mustangs and T5s die a rapid death behind even a stock 5-liter, let alone one with a blower/turbo or nitrous. Or both, but usually if ya go to that point you have an automatic anyway.

Nissan used some t5s in the later years 280ZX, i want to say it was n/a version of the car that got it. i want to say the Cherokee got it for a few years as well. they really were a fairly common 5 speed for a while in the 80's.

The one's with the good ratio's were be hind the 350, .72(350) vs .63(305) [5th]. the ratios were closer on the tranny's that have the .72 5th gear.

I have a t5 that was behing a 305, though it doesn't have the stock bellhousing, but one from a early corvette. I plan to swap it for a T-56 that I have. I'll sell you the t-5 for 800+shipping once I have the t-56 swap complete.

The T5 was used iin the 280ZX Turbo. Nissan didn't trust their ironcase behind Turbo torque, so for a couple years the Turbo was only available with an automatic. (Same automatic as used in Starions and RX-7s BTW). Then they put in the T5.

Chevy *never* put a 5 speed behind the 350. The highest rated T5s were only rated to 300lb-ft of torque, which the 350 surpassed. You couldn't get a manual trans with overdrive behind a 5.7l in an F-body until the 4th-gen, which used the T56. The C4 used a T10 with an addon overdrive unit just like the old days (they called it the 4+3) until they started buying 6 speeds from ZF. Never was there a 5 speed in the 'Vette...

What about the T-5 used in the 5.0 Mustangs? They are super easy to rebuild...I did mine back in the day. Used ones usually had warped countershafts that vibrated at high rpms. New ones can still be bought pretty cheaply. Look at ads in Mustang magazines.

The Mustang T5 is fundamentally the same as the Chevy T5. Same rules apply, there is a 2.95/3.15 First trans used in V8s and a 4.0 First trans used behind fours and sixes. (The 4.0 First unit is WEEEEAAK and only rated to something like 200lb-ft!)

The Chevy trans makes a nicer swap behind a rotary because the input shaft pilot is the same diameter, within a thousandth or two (close enough!). The Ford input is much larger and would need to be centerless ground down to size.
