Such thing as 10mm Apex Seals???

Ok I thought Apex Seals came in 2 and 3mm, 3mm being the durable seals... now I had a guy who claims to work on FD's and that there are aftermarket 10mm seals... I didn't want to call him an idiot to his face until i was sure... any ideas on this one?

Never in my life have I heard of 10mm apex seals. That would require some hardcore machining on the rotors, I don't even see how they would be stable. He's full of the poo poo.

What an idiot.... perhaps there are other seals that may be confused with the Apex seals? Something 10mm?

I at SOME time recall having heard of SOME sort of a 10mm seal for SOME other car SOMEWHERE. I'm certain it had nothing to do with an RX7.

Earlier rotaries had carbon apex seals that were much larger than the 2 and 3mm seals. Figure that 1mm = .0397".

So roughly speaking a 10mm apex seal would be about .4 inches. That is pretty freakin' huge, the carbon seals aren't nearly that big IIRC.

Maybe he meant spark plug wires, 10mm is a common size.

I think the model T had 10mm thick piston rings.

Pre '74 Mazda rotaries had 6mm apex seals.

I've got one 18mm apex seal, the only thing is it's all taken apart in 6 pieces.

I haven't heard of any 10mm but go to rotaryengine.com, they sell 6mm. I don't quite understand how that would be better. Seems to me that it would put more preassure on the seals. Maybe mm are half the size in Canadia?

There are five distinct possibilities:

1 He's an idiot
2 He's a liar
3 He's a drug addict
4 He's joking
5 You misheard him

No serious engine builder would consider building 10mm seals. There's absolutely nothing to gain and a lot to be lost -bigger seals mean more friction which is never good.

didnt the NSUs have like 5mm or so?
No RX-7 had bigger than 3mm stock. I think I've seen aftermarket 3.5mm, but older Rotaries had some funky ****

Perhaps he was quoting a different dimension than we are thinking of. With the "short" seals from the RX-8 in the mix now, perhaps he was talking about the height of the seal -- 2mm x 10mm x 80mm.

I thought the pre-RX-8 seals were shorter than 10mm?
