stripping sound deadening for race prep

I'm building an IT7 car right now. How do you guys get the sound deadening out of the car. I'm chipping it away with a chisel right now. I put dry Ice on it but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Is there a better way?

Thanks,
Mike

I just put an air chisel on it. That thing cut through it like its butter. It took us maybe an hour and a half to do the whole car.

Some people try heat guns, I think this just turns it to muck! I found after doing several cars that a chisel and a few beers is the best way to do it!

I heard of this great way of doing it from Grassroots Motorsports.

Get about 40lb of dry ice cut into sheets. Mash the dry ice into snow and shovel it on in there pretty heavily. Kick back, have a beer. (note: that was in the instructions ) After a while you'll hear the stuff shrinking and pulling off of the metal. Pull the sheets off and keep re-using the dry ice until it's all gone. Sand and prep for paint.

I haven't tried it yet but the theory is sound.

I used a heat gun and a wide metal scraper. stank badly, burnt more fingers than I realised that I had but did the job. For the fine residue and bits I didn't get, wax and grease remover (like "prepsol") disolved it nicely. I removed a sh!teload when preparing to have someone modify my transtunnel.

I got a rubber mallet and beat on mine till it flaked up. Ofcourse it was 30 degrees and the car was outside in the dead of winter. It worked for me.

A paint scraper and a small butane torch from Home Depot did the trick for me!. I had two garbage bags full of the **** when I was done.
What I've seen some racers do also would be to strip the car down to just the shell and have it acid dipped!

How much does acid dipping cost and where could I find a place to do this?

You might try calling some local body shops and see where they would get it done.

not a bad idea. I was hoping to be able to compete with you guys on the 28th, but I don't think I'll be able to get the car ready by then. I will, however, be out there to watch.

thanks,
rocky

Thanks! I can't argue with that, though. That engine isn't going in until I get that lightweight flywheel. As soon as that happens, you are going to see some serious work going on. I'll have enough money to do it if I can sell that car.

I've heard if you lie rags on top of it then pour paint thinner on it and let is soak for a while you can just scrape it of with a putty knife, then use the still soaked rags to wipe off the residue.. It's supposed to remove it with out denting and scratching up the metal... I'm going to be trying this out this week to see how well it works.. I've also heard you can use gas too...

The sound deading alone was probably 60 lbs. Then you have the carpet padding that you wouldn't put back in, thats another 20-25lbs. then there is a lot of stuff under there than you can get rid of. I'd say a good 100lbs. Not too shaby for a free mod.
Mine came out of the first gen.
I have my second gen stripped and ready to get the deadining out. it looks like there's more there than in my first gen.

Dragon buddy, the only cramp in you style is the fumes and the mess - some thinner, gas, chemical goo etc may also play havoc with your rubber seals etc.

Even the smell of the near burning tar was hard on me... coughing up black boogers etc.... not pretty (not that I was beforehand though )

Dunno about how much weight it saves, I did it to prepare for some welding - figuring it was cheaper me doing it than a workshop. The weight saving from my 76 Mazda 1300 would be negligable (760kg on the rego papers), but it is something less to burn in an accident.

I inadvertently hit some of it with a steel brush wheel on the power drill when stripping paint.... well, actully I did it quite a bit... the **** goes everywhere , all through the under-dash area, headlining, head, ears, etc! I recommend NOT doing it that way.
