Single 95 Rx-7 vrs single 98 Mark 4 Supra ( 1200 rwp )

Hey guys i'm a new member here and i'm wondering what to do as far as going to a single turbo setup on the 95 rx7... The 98 supra comes into play with this article because this is the car that I will be aiming to beat in the quarter mile... The supra runs a 9.20 quarter and is a friend of mines... You see the thing is that the rx-7 of mine is just a little something that I picked up without anyone knowing so that I can build it in my garage and when it's done scare the **** out of my good friends supra... NOW to the difficult part, people have be telling me that your better off rebuilding no matter what because the stock are twin and are just a weak engine as far as quality is concerned. The questions that I would like to be answer are whether to go with the brand new 13b used 20b and then what else to get with it so that the RX can be running around 8's... 8's is my goal you tell me the Horse it needs and which way you would go as far as parts are concerned... This is going to be an expensive project no matter what so don't worry about cost when I bought the car I knew fully what I was getting into...

Thanks, Ryan

No thats the reason I want to go single 7 because I personally like the body style better and it's something different... My friends won't even talk about rotarys so I'm gonna surprise them a little bit

You won't be able to match that supra in the 1/4th and still be street legal (I doubt very seriously he is truly stree legal). You pretty much have to remove all emission controls just to go single...much less huge single that can make that much hp.
You will have to race port your motor, dump about 30 grand or more under the hood alone.
And to top it all off. You still will not have the reliablilty level that the supra has. Our cars are fickle and require a certain type of person to own them.
I suggest you read up and find out how hard it is to simply achieve 4-500 reliable/street legal horsepower.

Then I think you will do as Red 7 said and get a supra.

dude you'll be fine... if you are serious about a 20b, you'll have more than enough power to beat the guy.....

as far as being street legal.... well, depends, emmission wise you won't, but many many single guys on the board don't have any emmissions stuff and drive the car daily... if you want to keep emmissions, than yea, i don't think you are going to do it with a rotary.

a big single with a 20b can net around 700 hp... if you are serious you should pm pluto, he runs like 25 psi and nitrous on his 13b with stock seals and gets over 550 rwhp.... but he's also about the best tuner in the country so....

Yeah well like I said i'm willing to spend the money I knew I would need to when I bought this car... And actually in CT there are no emissions even though they just started them again they have been postponed and all of our legislaters are aiming to get rid of them for good... And actually his supra is street legal if you want his site i'll send you it he's a good friend of mine... Anyways a 13b is a lot easier to get in contact with than a 20b even though I have a source that supposedly get me one... SR motorsports cars haul *** with their 13b engines and their stage 6 turbo is unbelievable... Now that you know where on stand on what to do what would you do besides get rid of the car ahahah thanks guys

Well for one you're not going to match the 1200 hp and you don't need to you're anywhere from 600-1000 lbs lighter... what you do need is a 20B, single turbo, T72 or bigger I would immagine, new clutch 2+ disk, new drive shaft, axles, diff, tires, bridge port or periphreal port, haltech, or motech ecu. No way the motor will be street legal strictly from a HP / Weight Ratio.... but as far as looking stock or near stock sleeper, I think you could do it... but this would be more of a top fuel dragster project, and you're likely to spend as much as a barely used viper costs... 40+ G's since the 20B swap alone will get you into the 20K+ range... and turbos, ECU etc... all are 1000's of dollars.... I hope the FD was cheap

I just don't understand though why you can't do it with a 13b when SR motorsports is and sells all the same parts they use in it

If I remember correctly, SR's car has a modified back half and runs slicks to attain those times. I would consider giving Gotham Racing a call as they're working on a 20B setup that's lighter than other 20B "kits" out there and Steve knows how to make serious hp. Once you start getting up there in hp however, there's lots of other stuff that needs upgrading in the drivetrain. Much more than on your buddy's Supra. That's the main issue. There are no simple driveline solutions.

You mean Sorrya$$ Racing ??

I'll be quiet now... I'm a road (course) racer anyhow, and don't think skill is measured a 10 sec. @ a time...

It won't be easy and people who make over 600 RWHP over periods of time (6+ mo.), are in the extreme minority on the forum.

It's all about returns to scale.

You can pull off a semi reliable 400RWHP That will do an 11 Sec quarter mile. Cost = roughly 20K

However to jump from 11seconds to 9seconds is going to cost at least double . In addition, this power level will widdle away at any drivablity, and or reliability you may have had at the 400RWHP level.

If you are crazy enough to own one of these cars, you are probably crazy enough to chase your elusive 9.2 second quarter mile.

Good luck

if you wanna run 9's, you're gonna need a 20b or a supra motor. it's gonna cost way more than you'll ever want to spend and the likelyhood that you'll wanna drive it on the street is very slim

Abel used a 13b for a long time before he switched to 20B. I don't think his times even went down with the 20B. I believe both tops were in the mid 7s. and about street legal, haha, I think its tough to make a 11-12 second fully street legal 7.
