yeah i know, you considered airflow not going around them, but did you take into account airflow bouncing off them. the faster the air stream is, the more of it is gonna reflect off the face of the cooler. by not sealing it off at the sides, air will slow down dramatically in front of the cooler, allowing more of it to get sucked through the cooler as opposed to bouncing off.
