There can't be any difference in the pre-86 and post-86 13 housings. I have seen numerous people interchange rotors with success and the mazdatrix rebuild section clearly states that they can interchange the 89+ rotors into GSL-SE housings. I can't imagine Mazdatrix offering this in their engines if it was different.

I believe the only difference in the rotor housings of the GSL-SE 6 port and the later 6 port engines is the diffuser..Maybe the oil injectors too, i can't remember off hand..

But they are interchangeable..

Well, the housings *themselves* are not interchangable due to the coolant O-ring grooves being in different places.

I *have* a '87 13B that I can strip down and compare the housing shape to some 12A housings I have. Maybe stack them on a pair of dowel pins and take some high res photos of it?

Unfortunately I won't even be able to GET to the engine until after New Year's... it's at a friend's house and we can't get together to grip-n-rip this engine due to his end-of-quarter work schedule. But I *will* get pics for you guys... just be patient...

I have some '86+ and two 83-85 12A rotor housings. That would be very interesting to compare the shape from stacking them with dowel pins. I'll try to get around to it... eventually.

Does this mean you are going to be converting housings to PP also??

The machine shop that made my Mech's PP housing
made grooved rings on the PP piping so the Hose doesnt pop off and makes for a better clamp force

Real nice work!

If you want to get into foundry stuff
Like make a cast weber style manifold

It can be done cheaply

I'll PM you a DIY link

I put a 1/2" wide slight recess for a band clamp. It is just enough that with minimal clamp pressure it will not slip. I tested it before I pulled it off the lathe.
I'm afraid to go to the link you send me. I am easily influenced into doing too many projects at once.
But you can bet I will look!

You guys need to get ready because this is coming together very soon now. The pports for Ken should be finished this weekend and heading to the spray shop the next week. Cross your fingers
Something cool as hell I thought you guys would like. Ken has a "Maxton Rollerskate". It is number one of fifty. It weighs 1600 lbs. and has a boxed frame with dual wishbone suspension. It CAME with a 13b! I found one the same color as his and identical to it. It is a wicked little car and it shocked the hell out of me when he pulled the cover off and told me the history of it.

Here is a link to some history on the car. Tony Rivera built the motors for them. http://www.priceofhistoys.com/simon/page7.html

I have done a little research into re-chromed housings.
I had 2 housings re plated with a precision laid coating, however they have never been used due to the wear on the insert where the wedge cuts in. I wanted to see the quality of the coating before having a good set of housings done. Good meaning a set of 76 cosmo housings with the chrome peeling but no wedge wear or marks on the steel insert.
The process looks good and there is no post plating machining required. It is a Nickel, ceramic and polymer matrix that this particular company claims wears better than hard chrome without chipping or flaking. It has a low co-efficient of friction and can be used with an additional film lubricant that is also nickel based so the bond between the two is good. The additional lubricant has the lowest co-efficient of friction of any solid in the world. Sound good? You have 2 machined housings and I have the place to re-plate them.

The problem on plating is that this is the only process I have found so far that has any real buildup to speak of.
When I take these down .020" it has to be built back thicker so it can be taken back to spec. Chrome only goes down a few mils and you would not want to try to build it. It usually peels in layers when you do.
But for side plates what you are talking about should work great I would think.

You are an animal.

When I get my engineering degree and some experience, I will start a cottage company doing something like your rotor housing operation. Don't worry, this won't be for about ten years.

Scalliwag I just had to pop in this thread to say, I've been following what you've been doing for a couple of months now and you are the man.

Hopefully by April enough testing will be done to offer the service to people with the understanding it is still very new. There will not be any motors with many miles by that time. But we will know if anything has failed up until that point.
