Performance HELP!!!!!

Hi. I have a 1990 RX-7 GXL non-turbo. (it might be GTU but it doesn't have the GTU spoiler so I figure its probably not). This car is like amazing. It has about 255 000 km (160 000 miles, forgive me, I live in Canada) all on the original engine. Usually, they die at around 160 000 kms (around 100 000 miles) but this one is still living. I might decide to sell it, but as of now I'm keeping it.

I've only had it for several months and I've parked it for the winter. Since it has such high milage I've decided to hold off on the engine mods until I get a new re-built engine. I'd like to get started on the exhaust. I'll be getting everything from the header, taking off the cat, getting mufflers and bigger pipes. I don't know too much about RX-7 performance parts so I'll need a little help. I have several questions

1. What company makes good headers for my year RX-7?

2. What company makes good mufflers for my year RX-7?

4. I'll be getting bigger pipes as well, and I was thinking about 3" pipes, but a friend told me getting that size might be too big and it would actually hinder the performance because there wouldn't be any back pressure. Is that true? If so, what size should I be getting?

5. Like I've said before, I will be getting a new re-built engine once this one dies. I am just curious to know if there are any companies that make rotary performance engines without turbo. I'd like to add a T4 turbo at the end myself.

If someone could help me out by naming a few good brands and companies for mufflers and headers that would be great. Thanks in advance.

You're in Manitoba. The nearest popular rotary shops are either RX-7 Specialties in Calgary, or there are a few in the Toronto area (a-spec tuning, magnus motorsports, mazdees). Any of them can do performance engines and give you info as well.

It's pretty complicated to add a turbo to an NA Rx-7. Most people (inlucidng myself) just suggest selling the NA and buying a TII car, then upgrading it's parts on it. The TII engines are a lot more perfomance orientated, and cars have upgraded drivetrains, suspension, etc.

Welcome to the forum.
Browse through the "second gen specific" forum, there's tones of into there that can give you advice on your car and questions.

Thanks for the advise and info.

I was thinking that engine is almost dead and about to go, so when I get a rebuilt one or get this one rebuilt, maybe I should just get the turbo2 engine. They would be re-building it from scratch right? so then I'd only have to change the minor things like the fuel regulator and fuel pumps and small **** like that, nothing major. I could be wrong, i don't know too much about rotory engines. There are only 3 Mazda dealerships in Winnipeg, and 2 of them do re-build rotary engines so maybe I could get them to do it. Getting a performance engine isn't a big concern, its just be nice if I was getting it rebuilt anyway.

When it comes down to it and its time to rebuild, I'll most likely just stick in any/all the performance engine parts that I can get and just rebuild it using those. Is that a good idea?

From what I have ehard the swap from an N/A to a turbo Motor is a little complicated and can sometimes be a hasle. You can probably avoid all the trobul by doing your home work first and talk to one of the shops mentioned above about the swap They will probably mention to you that the 2-4 grand you are going to cough up to them is just for the engine and you will need to get the rest of the parts seperately such as the ecu intercoller transmition and such but I am no expert I am only relaying what I have read or have been told.

Don't take your car to the Mazda dealer. Have a rotary shop do the work or do it yourself.

The vibe I'm getting for a turbo is not good. It seems like I should stay away from getting a turbo. Is there any way I could get a turbo in my car or should I completely perge my memory of the idea? Would a supercharger be ok, or is that a bad idea as well?

I don't know of any rotary shops in my area. If someone could tell me where the closest one would be that would be awesome. I'm guessing it would be RX-7 Specialties in Calgary, but thats only my guess. Any and all help would be good. Thanks.

Yep, your closest is Rx-7 Specialties in Calgary ... about 12 hrs from you. Their website is www.rotaryengine.com (it doens't get updated much). They do great work and have VERY good prices for their rebuilt engines by the way, probably cheaper than anywhere else in Canada from what I've seen.

Turboing an NA Rx-7 is a big task. 98% of guys (myself included) will recommend selling the NA and buying a TII. Believe it or not, it usually ends up cheaper this way. Plus then you have the good powerful 4port 13B turbo core instead of the 6port NA core which doesn't have much performance potential. The TII drivetrain is also a much for high power, so it's ready to go right there.

Do some searches in the 2nd Gen forum about turboing an NA. Read up on Aaron Cake's posts. He's from Ontario and turbocharged his NA RX-7.... he's definitely THE man on the forum to talk to about this stuff.
