Perfect Engine Stand for Rotaries(and Flywheel Lock)

I was able to mount my 13B-REW to a generic engine stand without using a rotary engine adaptor. It's an AC Delco 1000lbs engine stand purchased at a local Murray's Auto store for $50. It came with 4 adjustable arms to hold the engine. I only used 3 of them. This particular engine stand seems to have more arm orientation adjustability than others and that helped.

Added bonus was that the left over mounting arm can be used as a flywheel lock. One advice in doing this is to use the top or bottom right bell housing attachment hole to lock the flywheel instead of the top left as shown in the picture. I happened to choose the weakest one and managed to crack the top left bolt hole when I was trying to loosen the front eccentric shaft bolt...

Looks good...But how are you planning to take the engine apart and put it back together?

What do you mean? He only has it bolted to the front plate. Should work fine.

Looks good man.

That's pretty cool. I did something similar to that with mine. I think I like the non-diagonal look of mine a little better. Either way, we both saved money.

Cool

Personally, I never saw the need for any additional adapters.

w/o the fingers or an adapter it puts the weight more off center tho... which isn't that big of a deal, but it helps for rotating the engine.

I mounted it diagonally to keep the center of rotation close to the center of the engine if that makes sense. Rotary's so light and compact, it probably doesn't matter.

I was ready buy an adaptor since that's what people recommended when I searched, but was pretty happy to find I didn't need one!! It saved me money and time so I thought I'd share the idea on the forum.

It makes sense. My way causes the front of the engine to feel heavy when the alt and water pump are installed. Otherwise, it's balanced pretty well. I think it has to do with the heavy rear plate cancelling out the slightly forward-of-center intermediate plate. I can feel the weight differential change when flipping the engine around during the build process.
