Mild porting/smoothing

Hi. Im currently rebuilding my engine and I´m thinking of smoothing up the exhaust port since the port is smaller than the sleeve. What I´m thinking is just porting it in the same angle as stock but take it down to the sleeve. Will this make any gain at all and how will it work without porting the intake ports? Also, is it a must to make the port wider when making it taller?

Thanks!

Yes you will get a small gain. It will work just fine without porting the intake. The intake port is where you will get most of the power increase, but just an exhaust port alone will give you a very small power increase. You do not need to keep the same shape when porting it, all you are doing is creating a bigger space so air can get out easier, shape isn't a huge deal, however, most shops do tend to keep the same shape, just making it bigger.
