K&N intake?
Can anyone give me any information on their experience (or whatever) with the K&N drop in replacement filter? How much does it cost? How well does it work? How much of a horsepower gain does it give? Or can I use two of their cone filters in the stock air box? I am mainly interested in the drop in replacement, or whatever works best. Any feedback would be greatly appriciated. Thanks.

I would definitely go with the cone intake. No you can;t drop in 2 cones into the stock box. the cone will replace the box itself and give you from 5-10 HP probably. The drop in will maybe give you 3-5 i guess. I'm sure you could custom make a dual cone intake system if you like. Or make a cold air box to make the intake air temps lower. Well there ya go.

anyplace that sells the k&n drop ins should have the cones. thier called a "tapered" cone. they have really big ones. just get the one of the size you need in length. and whatever inlet size you need.

K&N Drop in replacements are good...
I installed mine yesterday paired with a Racing Beat Cold Air Inlet Duct and it is pretty good. I didn't have enough money for a good cold box so I went and got this combo for 160 bucks (100 for the duct/60 for the filter at racingbeat.com) and change (1.50 for degreaser and 1.50 for a tube of black silicone adhesive). There's some cutting involved for the Cold Air Inlet duct but it was so easy to figure out. They had installation pictures at Mazdatrix.com. The hardest time I had was removing and re-installing the air hoses. I broke one in the process because it was dry rotted. No big deal.
As far as performance....It was a big difference over stock. I would say it breathed better. I never knew how many horses my seven had to begin with but it sure hauled major *** after I test drove it.
Hahaha...funny thing happened while I was test driving. I forgot to hook up one of the brake hoses (I removed this hose to get to the one I broke) back in its place. It revved up and down 2k to 3k and so forth. I decided to drive the car around the block. In the middle of a declining road I realized I didn't have any brakes. That worried the holy crap out of me and I thought that messed this car up big time. Yes.. I made it hope slowly but surely. I popped up the hood, checked out my ABS relays (for some reason), then I looked over my master cylinder followed the line/hose directly to the hose that I took off. Whewwww! I put it back, cranked up the beast, revved perfect, pulled off the drive way and off to the sunset...with a big grin (of course).
Sorry for the essay but K&N filter is good in my opinion.

You paid $160 for the drop in filter or the cone one? You can get the cone K&N from discount auto parts for around $40-50 which will give you better performance than the drop in. But you noticed a difference just with the drop in huh? Thats good, when I get my cone should be able to tell then.

I don´t recomend the cone filters, not because the cone, is because the heat that your engine will swallow. Those cold intakes with cone filters are not cold enough, in his page, Steve Ciriani has a discussion about this point. www.scuderiaciriani.com.
Once you install the drop in K&N filter, you can do the Poor man stock intake box modification that is explained in the Rob Robinette´s web page - I don´t remember the address right now-. That´s what I am going to do.

Yea, I am going to do the cone & cold air box for my car. I am also going to have another fresh air supply from the front spoiler. I plan on not gettin very much warm air in there at all & hope to see 10RWHP once I am all set in done with my intake system.

If I can not use the stock air box because another intercooler, I would like to use the M2 intake, is very famous but very expensive, around $500. It gives TRUE cold air. Is made with carbon fiber.

Perfect!, if you have a BIG-*** intercooler, use the cone filter as intake, it will fit to you and to those pals that has big intercoolers, for the mortals like me with the stock intercooler, the more reasonable and healthy solution is to use a TRUE COLD air intake.
