Idea to save turbo when engine blows

I've been thinking. What if you pot a fine mesh wire over the exhaust ports to catch the apex seal before it tries to go through the turbo?

It would be thin enough not to cuase a significant loss in flow. Porting would help this out. Ofcourse it would have to be made of something to withstand the heat. Mounting should be easy enough to figure out. Maybe sandwiched between the engine block and gasket.

Assume that I could find something that would stand up to the heat and I could mount it reliably. Why wouldn't this work?

This could be good insurance for your turbo.

That's gotta be some mesh wire to not fry from the heat or get shredded from the pieces (or shards) of metal that was a seal in it's previous life.

It would be cool to have some safety device to help preserve the turbo when the seal breaks.

I can't see any type of wire mesh withstanding EGT's in the 1600-1800 range. Esp. considering how small the size of it would need to be to trap particles.

Stinkfist i think KraftDinner summed the situation up on your idea correctly

Inconel mesh screen. Don't know if it's even made. Who is going to be the guniea pig to test what size mesh gives the best relationship between turbo damage minimization, and flow. I'll pass. But is does seem like an interesting idea.

The pressure loss across the screen, even with significant porting would be appreciable. Too much of a performance loss.

I would suggest spending time and money tuning. And maybe getting a single turbo that is less expensive to repair/replace...or go with a NA PP 3 rotor.

Dude... any mesh sturdy enough to withstand the heat will either be restrictive enough to hurt flow or will not prevent engine chunks from blowing right through. Probably both, probably all three!

It should be noted that it is NOT recommended to put mesh of any kind over the inlet of the compressor because it WILL get sucked in... conditions are orders of magnitude worse on the exhaust side.

A neat idea in theory, though.
