how can i lower my exhaust noise?

hey wuz up, i got an 86 rex, non-turbo, and o bought the hks hiper cat-back system, the racing one that cost like $1400, and its to loud, and i also got headers on it, but also i bought the exhaust for a turbo II model, because i was gonna swap the engine to a turbo, but i didn't, would that do any diffrence in the cars performance, cause the piping is like 3 inches, and i'm just wondering how i could lower the noise from the exhaust, thanx

Ur going to have to use some type of pre-silencers, like the ones www.racingbeat.com sells.

I use the Borla XR-1 for a presilencer. You do realize that if you want to make maximum power out of that thing, your best bet is to run true duals. And 3" is overkill unless you have a bridge port, or at least a REALLY large street port. The N/A's are always louder than the turbos because of less restriction.

aim the exhaust towards the ground.
that will help a little.

Ya the turbo really quiets down the exhaust and changes the tone.

Like people said, add a pre-silencer. But really, if it were me, I'm more about value for your dollar and performance, so you can get a no-name pre-silencer (basically a glasspack w/o the glass) for $20 and install it midway, or two if you want. It would only add like 1-2 psi of backpressure, but quiet it down a lot, and get rid of any raspy high pitched sounds if you have any.

I've currently got a rear muffler off a Subaru WRX - I assumed that the Rex made a heap of power and therefore it must flow a heap of air.... WRONG! I cant hit wide open throttle without it gagging and even on part throttle 60kmh (ummm about 28mph) in 2nd and 80 or so ( about 37mph) in 3rd are about max speeds (on a 3.7 or 3.9 diff).
My point? choking it doesn't work!
We have a local noise limit of 96db for pre 1984 cars and 90db for later.... so meeting it in a ported rotary is not particularly easy....

edited bit - its a 13b BP, 48ida weber, in a 1976 Mazda 1300
