Hardening Process
Does anyone know the process used by Racing Beat to harden their stationary gears? Is there more to it than just cryo-treating them?
I'm wanting to harden the stationary gears and e-shaft on my S5 N/A.

You can shot peen the root of each gear tooth, but the metal shot would of course damage any bearing surfaces so they would have to be re-ground. This is also done on industrial gears.
Other hardening methods include induction hardening, flame hardening, yadda, yadda, yadda.
There's a whole industry and science to hardening and heat treating methods. Lots of stuff to learn out there.

So how does it work? Could you do something like that on any rotary parts to make them more dense / stronger?
Usually the cranks bearing journals are repolished and hard chromed after shot-peening.
I suppose you could do it to the e-shaft.
But I'm more intrested in j200pruf's idea, titanium nitride coating. Does anybody know if this has been done? If there aren't any serious drawbacks I think that would be the bomb
