Just generally, or are you thinking of a specific generation of the car? FC, FD, what?

Most aftermarket filters will flow better than stock. The main thin to consider is the location of the inlet air. Try to avoid filters that will suck hot air from the radiator (under hood).

Ok, So what you are trying to say is as long as they are well placed there is'nt much diffrence between them ie. power gains and noise?

Most aftermarket filters will flow more than the stock paper type wich is more restrictive, but probably also filters better. To take full advantage of the increased air flow make sure its sucking in air outside of the engine compartment. As far as noise, usually filters that are contained in a box will make less noise that those that are open. A K&N drop in should work fine for increased airflow without the noise and heat.

I think Pettit uses K&N Filters to begin with, they just make a custom shield to keep hot air out of the intake.

Honestly, on a second gen the stock air box is the only setup that is in a position to get cold air. Any cone filter will be under hood air, unless you get out the hacksaw... I would just get a K&N drop in filter (they work great) as long as you are relatively stock. If you ever go with a bigger turbo you'll have to get a open cone filter...

Just one more point. What happens when they are all 20,000 miles old which is going to flow better? the K&N will be out of the running as the Oil will have come off by then and the Apexi as it is very fine may be strugling.

Who Knows? how small a Partical can damage your engine when you will be rebuilding it every 80k anyway?

I don't know what you just said about the HKS but I sware this is true. I went to the dragstrip I drove up there with a K&N and forgot to switch it with my hks both filters I cleaned that morning. I took some passes with the K&N and then rmember. So I put the HKS on and boom I ran 2 tenths faster. I know it sound silly but I have the time slips to prove it. the only thing I can think of that would do this is the HKS funnels the air in and the K&N is more turbulant because of this it made the mass air fluter giving a bad reading. But it is enough for me to be a beleever in the HKS. I will try to find the slips to post them.

Not really any kit for a 12a engined rx-7, but I have dropped in a K&N air filter in my car. Noticed a slight difference, but I'm sure that could increase with exhaust, and maybe a little opening up of the stock air box cover...

Take a look at your HKS here:

Doesn't filter too much and did the worst on HP gains.

? its the same as the K&N.

You will proberly find its a diffrent story when they get a little dirt on them, in theory wont the finer filters clog up alot quicker?

Hello hirok, I was wondering about your Apex'i intake: Do you hear the "moooing" sound the air pump makes when you decelerate? Or is it baffled enough to mute the sound? I had the RE Amemiya Intake a long LONG time ago (it was crap!) and the "moooing" everytime I let off the throttle drove me crazy!

Second, I know Apex'i claims no maintenance, but surely the thing gets dirty after awhile, especially after rainy periods. Have you ever cleaned your intake? If so, what did you do?

Uh, you are supposed to clean and re-oil the K&N every so often.

I have a generic *** $20 paper cone filter on my car. If you are that sensitive to notice 2 hp difference, you're much better off than me.

No you dont get what i'm trying to say, the K&N is alot finer and its oil bath type so the dirt sticks to it so it will get dirty very quick, what i am trying to say is at what point is the filter just to fine so geting cloged quicker and drops power. I also know you are supposed to clean and reoil your K&N but when did you last do it and how often (its easy to forget it when you change the oil)
