Rather a G-Force

I know what I would be buying for similar money to the stock cased GURU box..

G-Force GF-5R with magnesium case and a V-gate shifter.. this trans can handle well over 1000HP plus you can buy the sliders to change the box from clutchless to clutch assisted and change the parts over to do so in around an hour. Plus you can still use the V-gate on the strip or street

Refer previous posts for discussions on re-engineering of your car etc I am not going to go into the details again about what the GURU box is desined for compared with the G-force etc. :-)

If you have 5K US to spend on a gear box im sure you have $200US to make or modify a trans tunnel to suit a trans.

Im just saying for that kind of money I would not be using a box with a stock Mazda casing and especially trusing it to hold 1000HP. Look at around 80% of the fastest rotor guys from PR and the US. G-Force looks like the box of choice and the fact that you can fit it with a H patern or V-gate and convert the trans from a full clutchless drag unit to a down changable box for street use gives you more than the best of both worlds for the same kind of cash.

I also think its hard to justify 5K US on a gearbox for a more street orientated car when my old FC tank street car is running 10.84@125 with a $200 stock FC trans and stock drivetrain.

I agree re the 1000hp, if you are producing that go for a full drag box, no question.

FYI, many street rules do not allow you to change your case, so then your g-force answer does not really work.

Excellent to hear you have never had any trouble with your FC stock drivetrain, you are one of the few, so well done. Many have, that is why most Improved Production RX7's here in Oz are now going for the Guru dog gear-set and many drag guys are desperate for a decent gearset have approched Rohan to do the dragset.

So, two years have gone by since this thread was active. Anybody care to share their experiences with this setup? Pro's/Con's?

I will let you know in about 2 weeks.

I can do some videos too. I haven't really driven the car, for fear of breaking the transmission.

lol, yeah it's pretty dusty but interesting all the same. Appearance wise the kit is great, almost a shame to have to install it in the box but as the old saying goes, "Chrome don't get you home". Figured two years would be enough time to get some good feedback.

Later,

Steven

I think that a lot of people dont' run the box because it's very expensive and it's not terribly streetable. Most of the people on here cringe at the thought of no A/C... and they're going to drive a dog box? Heh.

I'd love to try one in my car because I HATE the gear ratios that Mazda picked. They work well for stock power levels, but once you get some real mods, 1st gear (and to a lesser degree, second) become worthless.

The Guru street race box gears seem perfect for a street driven car!

Steve Kan (Pluto) has first hand experience with one as he tested one on the drag strrip for a short time. If your really interested I'm sure he could tell you all about it. You could get his number from www.GothamRacing.com

Also, the original post said it was $5K, I believe the pricing has changed and by the time you pay shipping and all that seems like its up to about $6500 or so now.

I'll have to give him a call on this and see what he has to say. I'm one of those guys that don't mind driving it on the street every once in awhile with no A/C, heat, or cup holder so having it a little temperamental with the tranny during street excursions won't bother me much.

Yes, I agree that $5000+ would be out of reach for some but for those serious about performance it may have a means of being able to "bullet proof" the tranny as much as one can without slipping out the street class at the track. It would also seem to give you better flexibility with gearing, to maximize the horsepower and torque at a given rpm.

If I get any additional information I will post it for those who are interested.

Thanks,

Steven

What gear set did you get? I'm really interested in seeing how well your 20b performs with this tranny. Personally I still wish they had a 6 speed version because with the available lower rpm torque of a 20b, a tall 6th gear would greatly improve your 20b's highway mileage just like the tall 6th gear does for ls1's and Vettes.

Street strip version.

I spoke to Rohan about the 6 speed, for many ask me about it. But, when it came down to it; he said that people who use a dog box aren't always concerned about highway cruising.

He recomends that I drive in 4th gear, 1:1 ratio, for ear comfort.

Next week I should have it. We will see how it goes! Then, I will put the slicks on and head to the 1/4 mile track for a few easy passes. No roll cage in the car, so I am sure I won't be able to make more than a few runs.

T-von, what haven't I upgraded?

Chromolly Axles, Upgraded power plant frame, KAZZ 1.5w LSD, Upgraded diff suports, JIC FLT-A2 Suspension, Transmisson (GURU), Transmission blanket.

When I built the car, I threw a lot of stuff at it.

What else can I do?

Uhhhhh never mind, I didn't realize that your drivetrain was already modified. I guess all you need now is a parachute

For that, I was planning on using Jason's or Ryan's underware with a rope.

That should do it right?

Does anyone know of a reason that a box like this cannot be manufactured with non-straight cut gears? Are they too difficult to machine? I know they are not as strong but any reason besides that?

Thing is, thats a helical cut syncro box, not a straight cut dog box. Comparisons are really not valid between the 2.

Gforce makes a t5 proshifted to..if you compare the two(tremec and gforce) the gforce is better. As far as i am concerned gforce is by far the best for any tranny they offer. everyone you talk ot up there is ahands on and knows there **** to the fullest.
