Can someone tell me exactly what is the difference between the 87-88 turbo and the 89-91 unit? And how do i tell the difference visually?

Thanks

I don't think that there is a way to tell visually. But if I remember correctly...the blades in the turbo were trimmed and the compression was changed. But hell, I can't remember.

89-91 T2s have higher compression rotors. Stronger dowl areas. Also there is marking on the bottom of the rotorhousings with a letter in a circle. The newer rotorhousings have I think a z and something else in them. Thats the visual difference . Ill go look at my rotorhousings later and let you know what leters should be on it.

I believe the 90-91 turbos had 220hp, 20 more than the 88-89.

The newer turbo will have a rounder turbine housing. The 87-88 is flater.

The 87-89 T2's had 182 HP, while the heavier 89.5 + were 200 HP...Times in 1/4 mile were about the same...visually the 89.5;s had a cooler front air dam and 3 circle tail lights and the interiors were also different with 7 & 8K RPM redlines...Take your pick, their both great true sports cars!

Talking about the turbo itself. Not the turbo model FC

The wastegate on the later 89+ is bigger and the exhaust manifold is at a 90 degree angle to the exhaust ports giving the gas a more direct approach to the turbine. It is simply a better design.
