Can I use GSL-SE front and rear iron housings in my 87 N/A?

Just like the title says. I have a 87 SE engine that has low compression and I am going to rebuild it. Can I use the iron front and rear housings from an 84 GSL-SE in the rebuild instead of my damaged 87 SE housings? If not, why not?

Ah thanks. I took apart the 87 motor last night and the front and rear housings are reusable! Hurray!

Now just to clean up and reassemble.
