can I mount the oil temp sender in the oil pan.

I searched, and I know about the FC3S and the racingbeat model.

The FC3S.org has a nice peice, but $70 is pricy

I have also read in some other thread that the Autometer mechanical sender does not fit in the racingbeat adapter.

sooo.....

Im thinking of running the oil temp on the pan. I am not using the oil level sender and I can make a blockoff plate with a bung for the sender.

I figure this will give me a good general idea of oil temp in the engine.

It'll be high. Return oil will be hot. The normal place to read it is just before it goes into the engine. This tells you whether your oil cooler is working right and that the engine is being supplied properly cooled oil. Just use the stock oil pressure location. I made a tee setup with one side OP and the other side adapted for my mechanical oil temp gauge.

I know greddy makes a adapter that gives you a place to tap for both oil press and temp. I know it works for an FD but not sure about an FC

This is something I have been thinking about for the last little while..
I have the electric guage, the problem with oil stand, is the oil has travelled through the block somewhat at that point, so it does not report oil cooler effectivness, if oil flow is reduced, it just picks up block temp.
plumbing into the oil cooler supply line or oil pan is post engine oil temp, which is good, but again oil cooler effectivness is not shown.
I was thinking about oil cooler return line, welding a coupling cut in half onto the end of the banjo bolt that goes into the rear iron, but that will only work if the oil cooler again has flow...
I guess it depends on what you think is your problem area..
I have eliminated my oil cooler bypass stat, and have a front mount i/c so I think I am going to plumb into the oil cooler return line, to monitor delivery temp to the engine. but hearing what others have tried is interesting..max

mazda has a oil cooler line banjo bolt with a hole in it for their oil pressure guage. i used one for the oil temp guage in my fd, seems to work fine.

the autometer instructions tell me to install it in the pan as it gives the best reading for the general oil temp in the engine, and I think thats what Im going to do.

What temps are you guys getting in the pan? I got 192º or 202ºF (can't remember) when ambient was 59-60ºF. Water temp was below the 190ºF mark. Sorry I couldn't be more accurate. Temps taken at idle.

Japan enthusiasts tend to like to mod their cars that give them the least hassles.
The oil drain bolt + oil temp probe adapter is a popular choice.

I do have the old Mazda Comp recommended oil temp numbers as indicted in the oil pan here...

http://fc3spro.com/TECH/MODS/EL/GAUGES/otemp.htm

Racing Beat offers their oil filter pedestal adapter that conveniently has pre-drilled and tapped holes for a 1/8"NPT oil pressure and 3/8"NPT(?) oil temp senders.
I use one of those.

I run it out of my oil pan. Fit in there perfect where the old sub zero assist bs was. It works good and shows you all the fluctations in temp as it would located anywhere else, just not as immediate. It is mechanical btw.
