Angry Can i do a rebuild in my garage?

hi, i've had my rx7 for 2 weeks. the person who sold it to me forged a reciept of an engine rebuild, and now it needs the rebuild. I am absolutely skint so cant afford to get a garage to do it. Is it possible for someone who is new to rx7's to rebuild the engine. It is a 3rd gen 1993. Can you help?? -

How long will it take?
How much will it cost?
Wat materials do i need e.g. engine jacks?
etc.

I live n the uk so if anyone knows a garage which will do a rebuild for less than £1800 then let me know.

Cheers

Yes, many people do rebuilds in their own garage. Download the factory manual for the engine in you're car and read it several times. You will need some micrometers and a pair of calipers, you don't need anything fancy or expensive if you're not doing a performance build and this might be the only time you'll use them. You'll also need a torque wrench and a lot of common sense. If you have any questions about anything during the build make sure to ask BEFORE going any further. If you wait until after (like some do) you've already hosed yourself.

It looks like 1 GBP is worth almost 2 usd so you should be able to get all the rebuild parts you need for 1,800 could probably just buy a new engine for that much if you want to avoid the trouble of doing the rebuild yourself.

Ive rebuilt a couple motors in my basement using nothing more than hand tools and a table top. I bought my rebuild kit from Atkins ($900US for a S4 NA, not sure about a FD). Atkins also sells a rebuild video which I followed to a T and had no problems what so ever. I ordered the "Master" rebuild kit which really comes with more than most need, but better safe than sorry.

The time it would take all depends on how mechanically inclined you are and how big of a hurry your in. I usually take my time cleaning everythign up and painting all the parts, but the actually assembly of the motor usually just takes an afternoon. Youre safer not rushing it. Anyways, for £1800, it could be done if your up to the task

Which parts in the rotary engine are generally re-usable when doing a rebuild?

It completely depends on the builder and the budget. If everything is within spec of the FSM, a lot of people reuse side seals, corner seals, oil control rings (just the metal), and even apex seals if theyre just rebuilding for a coolant seal failure. Again, it just depends on what you can afford to replace.

You should be below your budget for a full Mazda rebuild kit and 2 housings. Thats about $1600+600+600, $2800 or around 1400 pounds. That leaves you enough for an engine hoist, stand, and most of the small things that will come up. If you know what you are doing or have somebody that can help out then you certainly can do it in the garage.

does anybody know anywhere where you can buy separate parts for the rebuild as it requires new rotor tips.

Ive had great luck with atkinsrotary.com

You can buy everything in nice packages, or mix and match individual parts.
As a bare minimum, your will need to replace all of you soft seals just to get the motor back together.
Gasket sets are relatively inexpensive and include everything you need.

Also, if you need new apex seals (rotor tips), do you mean one broke or are they worn out? Sometimes if apex seals break, it will ruin the rotor housing, which are over $500US new.

Hope this helps.

You can click on the 3rd gen link and under stickies should be the factory manual for download. I would use that for spec'ing out what you need, and use the videos suggested, because its MUCH easier to see it and replicate it than look at a 2D picture.

Sucks that the guy u purchased it from screwed u like that. Can you not get some of your money back from him?

The "rotor tips" are you are calling them are more commonly know as Apex seals. That are usually 2 or 3 pieces and utilize 2 bow-shaped springs to keep pressure against the rotor housing. Here is a nice pic where you can distincly see the individual pieces and the springs. The springs go between the rotor and the seal, btw.

If you're not keen on rebuilding yourself you may be better off buying a used engine from one of the uk club members (there's one knocking around on mrc for around £700 last time I looked).

I know there's always a chance that it may be a lemon but it's unlikely you'll get your engine rebuilt for under 2k Maybe give rxmotors a call as they're supposed to be one the cheaper engine builders (also v good), do a search for them on google.

i've found a garage who is doing my rebuild for £1600. it comes with a 12000 mile warranty also. so if you need a rebuild and live in the uk give him an e-mail- steve@rivettuk.com. His garage is in surrey. he also does modifications for dirt cheap prices.
