You must run a filter on the intank pump inlet or it won't last long from debris damage.
Most people using '044 in tank don't use a sock filter (because they are very hard to find and expensive), but rather an inline filter w/ and adpter to the metric threads on the pump.
The overall length of the inline filter and pump can be too much to fit together in the stock location. In this case you can run the inline filter where the stock fuel pump was and the pump off to the side of it w/ hoses connecting.
So, inline filter where stock pump was w/ the pump mounted upside down next to it. Mounted upside down because you are really trying to minimize pressure drop on the pump INLET side and it makes for a less convoluted inlet hose.
Make sure the filter inlet is very close to the bottom of the tank (like stock sock filter), but cannot be blocked by the bottom of the tank. To ensure this you could have an angle cut at the filter inlet or several holes drilled at the inlet or just be VERY sure it cannot slip/move any closer than you want.

I have seen the ATL filter pictures.
Does it have an internal pick up tube that goes all the way down very close to the bottom of the filter???
If not it is a very bad design as the filter media is quite tall so if the gas level ever goes below any part of the filter w/ slosh you are going to be sucking air and lean out!
