Air Intake

I'm going to build my own air intake for my FD. I was planning on useing a pair of K&N Inverted top filters but have heard that they are restrictive. I'm looking for some good filters. Anyone have any suggestions or luck with certain filters.
Thanks.

I want 2 build my own intake sometime as well. Basically want to go with something looking like Pettit's intake. Let me know how it goes, what kind of design you are going with, and how you are building it. Thanks

I'm just gonna go with the stock intake tubes for now until i can get some aluminum pipes. It will be similar to Pettit's as well. And I'm just gonna use some sheet metal to build a heat shield. I just need some answers about filters.

Cool

Well, the absolute best in filter is Blitz, and their new metal filters, but they cost a ******* fortune!! If you want something cheaper, then K&N is the way to go...

Do you know of any problems that may occur from putting a filter that's advertised for a 89-92 model on a 87 N/A? I don't want to possible screw up my engine by doing something like that.

Also, do you know much about the Bonez filters I've seen advertised on Rotary Performance's website. They claim better air flow than the K&N filters, but i would like to get some feedback from owners that know how well they perform.

The 86-88 RX-7 AFM's have a square intake, while the 89-92 RX-7 AFM's have a round intake. You can get an adapter plate from HKS or K2RD so that you can mount a round intake system (K&N cone filter, etc.) on the square 86-88 AFM.

As far as I know, the 2Gen Bonez intake has a K&N filter on it. Do you have a web link for that claim?

yeah the page is:

http://www.rx7.com/cgi-local/2catalog.cgi?cat=7&part=1

and this is a picture of the parts in the kit.

i don't think it looks like the standard K&N filter element, but i could be wrong. Oh, and thanks for the clarification on the difference between the 86-88 and 89-92 models when it comes to the intake.

K&N makes filters that look just like those Bonez filters, the inverted top series. http://www.knfilters.com/univcustcap.htm
i think im gonna use these filters. My friend has one on his MKIV Supra and he is running 20+PSI with only one of these filters so i dont think flow restriction is an issue. Does anyone know where i can get these filters for a decent price? My local parts store wants $70 each.

hmmm

does anyone know of any way to take in air from another part of the car (pipeing or such) to an enclosed air box.

My worry is that if I ran some extra intake pipes for the air box to just for example the front of the car, would it act like a straw if it got water in it and just suck it right into and through the filter?

A little bit of water sucked into the intake won't hurt, but if you go through a puddle or heavy rain your engine could very easily get destroyed by hydraulic lock. It is better not to make a completely sealed system so that water can drain out of the intake - look at the stock air box.

If you do a search on this site for cold air boxes, you will find many different designs.

Here is a link on hydraulic lock. It is about the radial engine's problem with oil pooling in the lower cylinders, but basically the same thing would happen if your rotary engine injested water.
