87-88, or 89-90 manifold?

i have a 1987 mazda rx7 non-turbo. i recently bought a turbo from a friend that came off a mazda turbo 2. im going to make my car turbo. i have purchased the turbo,(not sure what year mazda it came off. i bought an intercooler and a performance fuel pump. i needed the exhaust manifold. i was shopping around ebay for a manifold and found two. the problem is that they both look different. this one if from a 87-88 mazda rx7 turbo 2.

Solution is simple. Look at your turbo's exhaust inlet, if both holes are the same size and shape its the 89-91 turbo, buy the 89-91 manifold for it. The 89-91 manifold is divided, the front and rear rotors exhaust never mix till its in the turbine. The 86-88 turbo has two different inlet sizes, one will be obviously bigger. the 86-88 manifold has a collected tyrp manifold with a flapper door in it for the "dual scroll". The 89-91 turbo and manifold are the more disireable ones to be had. Either turbo you have, your going to need to do some extensive porting of the wastegates to maintain low boost pressures especially if you run a free flowing exhaust.

This one ^ is 86-88 style.

Do you realize that when you bolt either of those manifolds up to the car, the turbo will not fit because of your naturally aspirated intake manifold?

I assumed he did the appropriet searching and researching before he jumps into this. But if not.. SEARCh and realise what the heck yout getting into.

As far as making the stock turbo fit... it'll work if you fab a spacer, heres my buddies turbo on a first gen. Note the spacer on the manifold. Also note the extreme work on the wastegate to able to control boost creep. Boost creep is a BAD problem with stock turbo's, especially if its up graded and or any porting to the motor has been done and or free flowing exhaust etc. Boost creep is a REALLY bad problem on high compression motors (n/a engines) especially.

Most people just sell their NA and buy a T2. Usually, it's cheaper, easier and more realistic.

Seriously. The series-5 (89-91) version is a noticeable improvement over the earlier series-4 (86-88). With a little searching you can find a complete series-5 turbo engine dirt cheap & then sell off the stuff you already have.

Down the track. It will make life a lot easier.
