WRX Killed himself...perhaps literally

I just saw this happen and I called 911... I just saw a crazy accident on the freeway (East on 380).

I want to make this clear. We weren't street racing. I was driving south on 280 pretty fast, 80-90 mph, in the fast lane. I then see a silver WRX coming up behind matching my speed. He didn't pull a flyby or even pull up beside me.

My exit(380 East), was coming up so I lifted off the gas and began to switch lanes to the left. The WRX cuts over left a few car lengths in front of me and get over to take 380 East also. If you are from the Bay Area you may know that 380 East toward 101 is a two lane sweeping left hand turn. The guy in the WRX is now in front of me and he starts to speed up into the turn and I'm following him. He is about 10 car lengths in front of me. Again, we aren;t racing. I guess the guy wants to show off how good his AWD handles. The WRX looked lowered on stock wheels and maybe stock tires. They were't very wide.

I was going pretty fast, around 75+ MPH. I'm thinking, "this guy in front of me is going into this turn pretty fast". I don't see any brake lights either. I let off and give him room. At this point, I see him start to lose it and his car pitches left and his front end hits the underpass and then he bounces across both lanes and crashes into another car that is in the slow lane.

I had to do some evasive manuevering not to get collected in the accident in front of me. The WRX ends up upside down on it's roof. Once I got passed the wreckage I jumped on my cell phone and called 911. There were a lot of cars behind. I feel bad that I didn't pull over. But, I didn't want to get in trouble for "Street Racing".

I hope the drivers of both cars are OK. I feel really bad for the driver that got hit minding his own business.

Yeah, I feel bad for the guy that the WRX hit. The thing I'm most afraid of when I drive is some idiot like that smashing into me.

ive never wrecked a car.

i have had 3 of my cars wrecked by other people running redlights or rearending me.

ive avoided maybe 10 more accidents that some people i know couldnt have.

thats what sucks about driving... you can be the best driver in the world, but if some drunk dicksucking assfuck decides to come plowing into you when you are stopped at a red light blocked in on all sides by cars and curbs, there really isnt much you can do about it >:O i lost a perfectly good turbo omni that way....

yeah not stopping was probably smart, sadly. theres no doubt they'd try and blame you for racing and there'd probly be crotchy old women ready to testify to it.

Good move in calling 911 and not stopping. There would have been witnesses who would want to say you two were street racing.

Always amazes me that people will keep moving because they don't want ot be identified, but then come to a website and identify themselves and the circumstances of their participation (or lack thereof) as if cops cannot read.

Well, maybe they can't. Just seems like a strange thing to do.

Meh, you'd just have to provide skidpad numbers and be like "see, there's NO WAY he'd have been beating me through that corner."

I didn't know the police had a watch on this forum for evil-doers.

i hope he's alright

i also hope he learned his lesson

in some ways i think the hype surrounding certain cars is a detriment to uninformed/unpracticed drivers. they think just b/c its awd its somehow magically transformed into something other then a 3500lb box on 4 rubber tires subject to the normal rules of physics.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of "but it has AWD, there's no way you can keep up in the corners" or "but with the AWD it corners so much better." My reply is always "than RWD?... you can't be serious." They then prove to me how serious they are and how ignorant they are, all with the same statements.

I really think that the guy's tires just weren't up to par. He may have also overcorrected. He was going through a left hand turn in the left lane and I saw him crash into the "left hand" guard rail...before bouncing off of it and hitting the car in the right lane.

Man that's scary. My good friend Roxy wrecked at that same turn on her ZX6R. We were on our bikes that day and she got a bit too confident. Scariest thing i've ever seen. She almost died as well.

people who say things like that assume that the only RWD cars in the world are trucks and mustangs...not to say anything bad about trucks or mustangs, they just don't take turns well.

Good thing you didnt stop. Something similiar happened to two of my buddies when we were in HS in 2000. Both my buddies were driving fast (not racing), one car turned over, and we turned around to help. After helping we got back in the car and took off. CHP pulls us over a few miles down the road and tells my friend they have witnesses saying he was racing. The CHP officer ended up giving my buddy a ticket for wreckless driving, speed contest, and etc.... My buddy's license got suspended and the fine was about 1800 bucks.
