Tack on another C5 'Vette to the kill list!
Oh boy, this one made me giggle. I went out to a little Mazda meet last night.. had a great time, got some pictures, blah blah. But the real treat was on the way home.
I was in gas saver mode, cruising in 5th at 60 nice and easy in the right hand lane letting people pass me. As I was nearing downtown, I noticed the right lane was closed in a mile and a half or so.. there was very little traffic, so I took my time getting over. I noticed a car was gaining on me steadily, but figured he'd just pass me on the left and didn't bother speeding up for him as I would normally do in Seattle traffic. We peaked a hill and the car was only a couple of buslengths back now, I could make out pop-up headlights but had no clue it was a Corvette at this time.. I could see the cones up in the right lane in the distance, probably 3/4ths of a mile or so--the car was still gaining on me steadily.
So, I kept on going, traffic was light enough that he could have just waited a second or two for a car to pass and take the left lane to get by... BUT, instead, he gets into the right lane and REALLY starts getting up. At this point I was coasting down a light grade inbetween 60 and 65.. when he was close enough for me to see, I noticed it was a Corvette.. AWESOME! Perfect test for my first hard pull. He was probably going 5-10mph faster than me, trying to pass me on the right like a douchebag. I timed it so I downshifted to 3rd right when he was about at my rear quarter panel.. when he heard me downshift, he must have floored it because he pulled ahead to where my front bumper was at his rear.. until my turbo spooled! It was pretty cool out, so I got up ahead of him REALLY quick.. I pulled to 95'ish smoothly, putting him into my rearview mirror easily. Sweeeeet.
By the time I was nearing the end of my pull, I was far enough ahead of him that he had to give in and get behind me because the cones were getting pretty close. He did so with the lame, super-fast-no-blinker lane-change.. and as soon as he got behind me I let off to hear the TiAl which I hadn't had the delight of hearing at 1 bar since the rebuild.. and to top it all off (I guess since this was the first hard pull where I was really getting some methanol into the fuel mixture, I dunno?), as soon as I got into vacuum I spat 3 or 4 flames right at his front bumper accompanied by ungodly loud pops--beautiful.. it was the icing on the cake. I got back down to 60 and he got around me hastily.. I waved, but he didn't bother responding. *******. I guess he didn't like getting beat by rice.
As far as I know, he didn't have any mods. Seemed to pull like any other C5 'Vette I've encountered, but like I said, I didn't get a chance to talk to him.

Thats not a kill in my book. The guy was simply trying to pass you, and you didn't let him. He backed off, and let you ahead because the lane was ending. Then you spit some flames at him. Now you call him an ******* for not being friendly about the encounter.
Not a kill in any stretch of the meaning!!!

The guy was not "simply trying to pass me," he tried to pass me on the right in a lane that was ending in less than half a mile in LIGHT traffic when he could have waited less than 2 seconds for a car that was about to pass me on the left and then passed me there. CLEARLY the guy was asking for it, and CLEARLY the fact that I was in a loud, Japanese sports car had something to do with it. Am I wrong?
And sure it was a kill! A Corvette with a 5-10MPH and 1 car advantage couldn't keep ahead of me. We were both WOT, and we both knew that a quick pull was in store.. I dunno about you, but I call that a race even if it was only a 3rd gear windout, and I'm proud of the FC for pulling ahead with the odds stacked against it on its first WOT, almost-redline run.
Anyway, point is.. don't take my glory away. =)
