RX-7 Single Turbo Dragged!

Sorry Joe, had to post it My cobra against a 94 RX-7. The Mazda had a GR-63 single turbo, big street port, power fc, front mount, fuel system, full exhaust, etc. The first run was from a 3nd gear roll. I immidiately got a car on him as I heard him spooling, then slowly pulled a 2nd car length though 4th gear. I shut down because of traffic up ahead. We slowed down and waited for a clearning, and this time went from a 2nd gear punch. Same result, except this time I shot ahead and put even more distance on him as I slammed 3rd. I stayed on the gas into 5th. Seamed to have 2-3 cars on him at that point. We pulled over and talked for a bit. Apparently his boost controller was acting up and he was only getting about 12 psi boost. When he tried to switch it it dropped to 7 psi. I had to get some more gas as I was running below a 1/4 tank. He addjusted his boost controller to 16 psi and we went on the highway again. We had decided to do 3rd gear pulls, so we lined up again and went. I pulled ahead immediately as he spooled, but this time I gained ground a bit slower due to the higher boost he was running. By 4th I had a full car ahead when we shut down. The highway was begining to get a little crowded so we went to another road that was alot less cluttered. We did another 3rd gear punch. I waited for a sec and let him spool. As I heard his twin wastegates open I floored it and stayed side by side for a second, then managed to pull ahead through 4th gear. I decided to stay on it longer this time and wound out 4th and got a bit into 5th. I shut down at around 140. I had about 1 1/2 to 2 cars at this point, was hard to tell. Anyway, fun night and good races. Hope you have a safe trip home.

Well one thing for starters, he had to spool? He should have been brake boosting, 2nd you would probably have won regardless but maybe a car with 440 to the wheels would give you a better run. Good job regardless, the superchargers always get the jump.

I forgot what the gearing is like in the rx-7 but I know its shorter than in my cobra. I was at about 3500 rpm in 3rd gear when we punched it. I let him spool up a few times before I hit it but it didn't seam to make a difference.

I've raced numerous 03 Cobras with my car. From a 4k roll in 2nd gear, so long as I time my hit properly, he won't jump at all. I've found that the trick is to floor the car just a split second before the third honk to make up for the lag. The car won't go anywhere for that split second, but when it does (on the third honk) I'll stay right with the 03 Cobras. I've never tried to brake boost. It just doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

Brake boosting is easy man. It helps A LOT, no lag, just gets up and goes.

Sure. We can go play. 512 does seam pretty high for less than 19 psi. Was that on race gas?

Ihor, you car must be over 500rwhp by now...right? Since i dynoed at 380 I pulled on an 04 cobra that dynoed at 475rwhp.......But didn't pull on him a whole lot. Maybe 3-4 cars. Maybe because he had 2 friends in there and it was just me...No joke, the (modded) cobras are fast...Have you took yours to the drag yet?

Dave

P.S. Get out of our rotary forum you ******* trator!

I dunno. I changed my tune a little, but it was mostly in the mid range. Up top I actually took out some timing but leaned it out a tiny bit. I haven't been to a dyno since January when I put down the 496 and haven't done anything else to the car except brakes. I'm not an expert driver, but I feel I can speed shift this car pretty well. Alot of cobras are running around with poor tunes and alot of people can't drive. With your ball bearing 35/40 you should spool a bit faster than the gr63, so maybe you're not letting them jump on you initially. BTW, I'm mainly on here to waste time and contribute my knowledge from time to time

Yup he kicked my ***, nothing I could do about it. If my tune was a little more aggressive I think it would have been a better race but what can ya do.. later dicky

Im rather surprised you didnt pull him alot harder putting down those kinds of numbers. A guy I know has an 03 cobra that just put down around 500 whp, and Im probably going to have to race him this spring. His dyno sheet is absolutly incredible, theres hardly a curve, just a couple horizontal straight lines Looks like I might have a chance if I can get about 450 whp.

Its better to be safe then to blow the motor. You had a long drive home and it would suck to break something on the way. Remember I'm about 800 lbs heavier so I need to have the extra power.

In my experience with 03 Cobras, you'll win with 450 whp. I've raced one of the fastest Eaton Cobras in Tampa several times. He's probably a car faster than me when I make 425 whp, and my FD is not the lightest (heavy wheels, subs, etc.).
