My Z06 vs a STi (think it was stock)

I was coming home from my sisters house in Murrieta, on the I15 North, and around 5 miles into the drive i see a Blue WRX STi, following me through the very light traffic. I figure i know what he wants, so i keep going my speed (hardly any cops on that road, or there are alot. It changes day to day. I got lucky that there werent any) Well, about 10 miles through the drive, he pulls up next to me, on a particularly dark stretch of the 15. I figure ah what the hell, havent done it in a while, why not. I put it down to third and he takes off, (we are both doing around 90) a little before I do. I catch and start to pass him at 105, and shift up to 4th. I start pulling on him, and i can hear him shift, but he wasnt dropping back like i thought he would. We run it all the way up to where I have to put it in 5th, around 140-145. And he is still right there, (1-2 cars away tops) Then, at 155, he dropped back like there was no tomorrow, because he topped out. And then it was an oh **** moment for both of us.

Traffic, and it was rather thick, by normal standards, not to mention 155+. We both hit the brakes hard, trying to stop in time. (when we saw the traffic we were going around a long sweeping corner) I kept feeling the *** end of my car wanting to slide out, and the entire time im saying "oh **** oh **** oh ****" kinda like a mantra i suppose. We both manage to slow down (I was probably only about 5 feet behind the car before i started dropping back) but when i looked over, he was smiling ear to ear. Thinking back, I probably was too. I wouldnt say that I walked him, because it was close the entire time, but i was definitely still pulling when I shut it down. About that time we were near Temescal canyon road, and he got off the freeway. I got off at my exit, went home and told my dad about it (he used to do the same stuff as a kid) and he loved it.

(Please do not flame me about this, If thats all youre going to do, save it and move on. Im sick of people whining at me.)

Just thought i would share another kill with you guys.

(Note, My 01 Z06 is stock, 385 horsepower, 385ftlbs. Nothing more nothing less.)

So you were going 155 on a turn and had to hit the brakes. AND you were only 5 feet away before you truly slowed down.

And your Dad loved it?

I wouldn't even be going anywhere if I told my Dad a story like that. Your father needs some self-re-evaluation.

Holy Crap you are an idiot. I hope to God you don't get injured in a crash, dude. That is the kind of situation you will look back on and say "What the HELL was I thinking?!?"

you need to remember that when you are doing dumb **** like going 155 around traffic you are putting people other than yourself in danger. do yourself and everyone else a favor, quit driving like a dumbass. And if you feel the need to race, take it to the track where it belongs!

I was REALLY close to hitting the person i came up behind, yes, and that would have been bad, but I didnt (thankfully). Yes, my dad knows, and he doesnt mind, as long as i come home in one piece. Ive told him all these stories, and he does some of the same stuff in that car, when i let him drive. He raced a Lancer EVO VIII MR when i was in the car with him to around 130, that MR was just about as quick as that STi, that I raced.

My dad grew up before the muscle car era, and raced them out at hemet, and hung out with the old school street racing crowd. (at one point in time before he sold them or someone crashed into him) He owned a 71 El Camino, 2 66 Novas (one post and a hard top, hard top had 425 hp.), a 69 Camaro SS, and a 56 Vette with a locker, built to about 450-475 hp.

Call me what you will, theyre just words.
But dont you dare ******* talk **** on my father (or my parents in general), when you have NO idea who they are, WHAT they do, or HOW they live. That is one sure way to **** me the hell off. Maybe your parents could be a little more lenient, or *GASP* maybe if you paid for everything on your own instead of living on them, you could do what you wanted, and tell them to pound sand.

Better to be able to look back and wonder what i was thinking, than to look back and say, damn i wish i would have done more...

One note about all of this. Most of these races occured on a Freeway, that was for the most part straight, and well maintained (with no traffic for the most part). From what things ive said that I have done, yes it sounds like im the stereotypical young dumb kid that runs his mouth just as fast as he runs his car. Not exactly the case. I know that these things have consequences (and I have 3 tickets to prove it) Though ive gone to traffic school every time, and paid all my fines myself. Do the "crime" do the time. Yes, I realize also that i could hurt more than just myself. Thats why I do most of these things early in the morning when very few people are on the road. I try to minimize that risk as much as possible. I dont have a helmet (or money for one) I dont have the money to pay admission to race tracks, or to rent them.

Look, Im tired of being talked down to, as though anyone here has the right to do that. If you dont like what ive done, shut the hell up and dont post, or dont sound like an *** about it. Realize that im a (fairly) intelligent human being and i know that consequences exist for actions. And dont criticize me for a race, or a kill, in the goddamn kill section.

Like you have any room to talk? Youre 10 days younger than I am. I understand that it doesnt mean **** in maturity levels, but please oh wise one, tell me what youre doing to set up for your future? Do you have an associates degree already? Are you attending a school?

Stop judging me god dammit! Thats what most everyone has a problem with on these forums alot of the time. They dont know the other person, **** for all you know, i could be a 41 year old fat guy who has cancer and hemmrhoids. WTF does it matter to you?

Dont even try to be condecending or pull any of that **** on me. You think youre high and mighty, fine. Go jump on your soap box and preach to your stuffed animals. I dont want to hear your ****.

so you pay for your own car (with a co-signer... lawl)
you work hard but have no spare cash for weekend auto-x events (see other thread)
you drive safe but nearly rear end people on the freeway because you were street racing

you know the potential consequences of your actions
o rly?
surprise surprise nobody really gives a **** if you get killed street racing. darwin at his best.

we do, however, feel bad for the family of the poor nine to fiver dad who gets killed because you felt like doing 155 on public roads.

If youll note, I havent posted that ive crashed. These many things elapsed in the 2 full years that ive been driving that car (going on 3, 2 months left) I set my cruise when im on the free way more often than not, and I generally avoid doing anything when there is a large amount of traffic. Yes, for what ive said ive done, that is safer than most. Im not running around like some of the ricers in my home down, drag racing on the main street at 3 in the after noon.

I can understand not wanting someone to die of stupidity. Again, thats the reason that IF i do anything, I try to avoid traffic when doing so.

most older men, older men who have z06's do go around and post kills on other people forums. Your attitude, and definition of racing completely gives away you age, and age of experience with cars. As I said before in the last post, those of us who have been on this forum for awhile, have seen your kind come and go.

Whatever, Sorry that I offend you by posting a race/kill (however wreckless you perceive it to be) in the specified kill section. Screw this, I dont need to be berated by people i dont even know.

Tip:

Be aware of how close you came to a very bad situation... Now proceed with caution.

You don't need a lecture, because you won't listen. That's fine, we haven't earned your respect. That being said, work on becoming a better driver. I say this not because I think you're a BAD driver, but because it's important that you hone your skills if you're going to occasionally take part in a street-race--for your safety and others. Practice hard-cornering, high-speed cornering, drifting, heavy breaking in dry conditions and in wet, and work on your overall 'road vision' and feel.

The only times I've been arrested have all been related to making poor decisions behind the wheel--whether racing or drinking. And yes, going to jail several times, paying THOUSANDS in fines and lawyers fee's, losing my license on several occasions and being on years of probation suck... But I'm just thankful that during my reckless years (not too long ago) I didn't kill anyone.

Another thing, I've been rear-ended by a car on the freeway who was going almost 90mph when he hit me... Luckily I was going 60mph and driving an Escalade when it happened, so I was able to control the impact... But still, that's a sketchy situation.

Also, I knew a younger guy from Young Life (I was a leader) who's dad bought him an E36 Dinan M3, which is probably similar in output and performance to an earlier Z06 like yours... Anyways, he was running late to pick up his date for HS Home-coming, punched it through an intersection, hit a lip, lost control and spun out backwards and into a telephone pole. He died later that night.

He had a fast car but didn't know how to respond in extreme driving situations. So yeah, if you're going to put yourself into these types of situations, you'd better be able to react rationally and skillfully 100% of the time. However, the best advice is to avoid these situations at all costs. I would still work on driving technique when you're out by yourself though... It makes driving tons of fun and you don't have to worry about the adrenaline of a race affecting your reason, wisdom and decision-making ability.

Either way, I love kill story's and I've posted a few.

Dude...Just wow man. Honestly, thank you so much for that. Constructive criticism for the win! Ive been working on getting downshifting perfectly. Im getting to be within about 50 rpm of perfect, without slipping the cluch to get it there. I would love to be able to work on some of the other stuff, but theres no where to really cover any of that...no large open parking lots or anything, at least where the cops wouldnt come bother me. And no money for a track, but ive been working on some things like that. Back where i used to live there were some nice twisty roads that i had fun on. I kept getting them faster and faster, each time. I love that feeling, and thank you thank you thank you for the input.

It isnt a respect thing really, its more of a common courtesy issue. Not many people seem to show it to me, so I return the favor to those people.

i;ve told you how i feel rotary noob... please please be careful. you will really really regret it if you infact do kill someone. please, everyone is just trying to help you out. everyone speeds, everyone one has close calls, but certain people know when its is the right time to back things down a little. it's a lot easier to brake at 120 than 155+. you don't want to kill yourself or anyone else. even worse, you don't want to go to "pound me in the ***" prison for manslaughter..... everyone knows a z06 is no joke of a car, please please be careful.

just my 2 cents but next time just post that you ran a sti up in triple digits and leave out the fact about coming up on traffic and almost loosing it. i'm sure everyone else that posts in here has this happen but doesn't share it all the time.

Well, it was part of the race, and I'm not bullshitting it. If i censor it, then i try and portray myself in a good light. If i do that, then why tell the story? At least this way, (though some parts of it are obviously not the best of circumstances or situations) You get the whole view, regardless of whether it is good or bad.

Good points though, and I dont dissagree.

Alot of you guys are so full of ****! None of you have ever had a "spirited" moment in your FD or, whatever you drive, correct? I could understand the ignorance if there was alot traffic and he was weaving in and out. He should've taken into consideration that there might have been traffic around the bend. You have to assume worst case scenario and be able to tell what another driver is going to do before they do it.

Good points again, chinaman.

I should have expected there to be traffic, but we hadnt passed any cars up to that point, so wasnt too worried. But then we saw LOTS of cars. I havent done anything really "spirited" in a while though, sick of getting tickets. >_>
